Fungal threats become a growing concern

An unprecedented number of diseases caused by fungi have been causing some of the most severe die-offs and extinctions ever witnessed in wild species and jeopardizing crops to boot, scientists now report.

Fungi are wiping out amphibians on several continents, decimating bats in eastern North America, contributing to the disappearance of bees dubbed colony collapse disorder, and killing corals and sea turtles.

They are even threatening humans, if indirectly, by attacking crops. Fungi and fungilike organisms called oomycetes can cause significant losses to rice, wheat, maize, potatoes and soybeans, according to the researchers who write that the problems "vary regionally but pose a current and growing threat to food security."

To determine if fungi are causing more diseases and extinctions among plants and animals, the team, led by Matthew Fisher at the Imperial College London, combed through years of scientific reports.

This technique was tricky because diseases and their effects can be difficult to spot in plants and animals. It is also possible that increasing awareness of disease-causing fungi may have led to more reports, they note. With these caveats, they conclude that the data do support the idea that fungi pose a greater threat to plant and animal biodiversity than other pathogens, and the threat is increasing.

They offer a number of reasons why. When infecting a large, vulnerable population, fungi can spread so quickly that they wipe out the population before the victims become too sparse to limit transmission.

Fungi can also infect a broad spectrum of hosts, although with different degrees of severity. This can lead some less vulnerable species to become "super spreaders," carrying a disease that can spread to others, according to the team. Some research suggests the Pacific chorus frog may be playing this role in spreading the chytrid fungus that is driving other amphibians to extinction.

Fungi also travel well. Humans have been spreading them for a long time; for instance, the Irish potato famine is believed to have been caused by the import of potato blight from the Americas. The African clawed frog, a carrier of the chytrid fungus, was transported around the world for use in pregnancy tests. And recent evidence indicates that the fungus linked to the white-nose syndrome arrived in a New York cave from Europe.

Fungi's genetic flexibility can help them evolve virulence quickly. Fungi can rapidly acquire the genetic changes necessary to lead to the creation of new pathogens, and pathogenic lines can clone themselves. Humans help this process along by bringing together fungi that can still exchange genes but were once isolated from one another, the researchers write in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

And finally, fungi can also live independently, outside of their hosts. For instance, Geomyces destructans, the cause of white-nose syndrome among bats, lives in soil. Some soil-dwelling Ascomycota fungi can tolerate salty conditions, so once they have drained into marine waters, they can infect corals, sea otters and loggerhead turtle nests.

For this reason, fungal pathogens present a very different problem than other microbes that are dependent on a host for replication, according to Arturo Casadevall, chairman of the department of microbiology and immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

"Some environmental-acquired fungi kill their hosts but do not need them and consequently can drive a species to extinction," Casadevall, who was not involved in the research, told LiveScience in an email. "I agree that fungal threats are increasing and the threat from fungi remains unappreciated by most authorities who are usually focused on known bacterial and viral pathogens."

North Korea official says Thursday rocket launch unlikely

NBC's Richard Engel reports from Pyongyang, North Korea, ahead of the launch.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

PYONGYANG, North Korea -- North Korea is unlikely to conduct its planned long-range rocket launch on Thursday due to weather conditions, Japan's Kyodo news agency said, citing a government source.

"The weather is poor, and it is now past the launch time given, so there will probably be no launch," Kyodo quoted an unnamed government source as saying.

On Wednesday, an official told Western journalists that fuel was being injected into its controversial experimental?rocket "as we speak."

If all goes to plan, the launch, which North Korea's neighbors and the West say is a disguised ballistic missile test, will take a three-stage rocket over a sea separating the Korean peninsula from China before releasing a satellite into orbit when the third stage fires over waters near the Philippines.

Regional powers also worry it could be the prelude to another nuclear test, a pattern the hermit state set in 2009.

"We don't really care about the opinions from the outside. This is critical in order to develop our national economy," said Paek Chang-ho, head of the satellite control center at the Korean Committee of Space Technology, on Wednesday.

Once the refueling has been completed, the North Koreans will have to inject chemicals into the rocket which cause corrosion, which means the firing could come on Thursday, at the start of a five-day window announced already by Pyongyang.

Weather conditions on the peninsula also appear to favor a launch on Thursday or Saturday, according to meteorological reports from Japanese television.

Time Magazine's Jim Frederick discusses how North Korea's rocket launch is reminiscent of the North Korea of the past, and says how the launch violates U.N. rules on missile tests.

The launch of the Unha-3 rocket, which North Korea says will merely put a weather satellite into space, breaches U.N. sanctions imposed to prevent Pyongyang from developing a missile that could carry a nuclear warhead.

N.Koreans desperate for Western approval of launch

James Oberg, a former rocket scientist with the U.S. space shuttle mission control who is in North Korea, said the rocket was not a weapon, but "98 percent of a weapon", requiring more technology, although not much.

This is the third long-range rocket test by North Korea. It says its second succeeded in putting a satellite into orbit in 2009, although independent experts say it failed.

The firing coincides with the 100th birthday celebrations of the founder of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, whose young, untested grandson, Kim Jong-un, now rules. Kim Il-sung died in 1994.

At a national conference of the ruling Workers' Party, Kim Jong-un was named first secretary, a new post created to give him the official stature to head the state where his grandfather remains "eternal president."

His father was also named party general secretary for eternity at the conference, the North's KCNA news agency said.

The Council on Foreign Relations' Richard Haass discusses North Korea's recent moves.

Paek, briefing foreign journalists in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, declined to comment on the launch date.

"As for the exact timing of the launch, it will be decided by my superiors", Paek said.

South Korea, which remains technically at war with the North after their 1950-53 conflict ended with a truce rather than a peace treaty, warned Pyongyang it would deepen its isolation if it went ahead with the launch.

Security sources in Seoul, citing satellite images, have said that North Korea, which walked out of "six-party" disarmament talks three years ago, is also preparing a third nuclear test following the launch, something it did in 2009 and a move bound to trigger further condemnation and isolation.

South Korea holds parliamentary elections on Wednesday, although the rocket does not appear to have been a major issue with voters more concerned about job security.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that history pointed to "additional provocations" from North Korea after the launch, an apparent reference to a nuclear test.

"This launch will give credence to the view that North Korean leaders see improved relations with the outside world as a threat to their system," she told cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

"And recent history strongly suggests that additional provocations may follow."

She also called on China to do more to ensure regional stability.

China, impoverished North Korea's only major ally, on Wednesday reiterated its pleas for calm and said all sides should make efforts to establish peace in the region.

Cardinals edge Reds, 5-1 for first time since '08

By JOE KAY

CINCINNATI (AP) - They lead the majors in homers. Their starting rotation is one of the NL's best. So far, the defending World Series champion Cardinals don't seem to miss Albert Pujols all that much.

Carlos Beltran and David Freese homered again on Tuesday night, and Kyle Lohse provided another stingy performance, leading St. Louis to a 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cardinals are off to a 5-1 start for the first time since 2008, playing like champions in the season's first week. No letup at all.

"If those guys keep doing that, we're going to have a pretty good club," first-year manager Mike Matheny said.

Beltran, counted on to help make up for the loss of Pujols, hit his third homer off Mike Leake (0-1). Freese, the World Series MVP, added a two-run shot off Leake - also his third.

St. Louis came into the game leading the majors with nine homers. It has five in its first two games at Great American Ball Park, which is one of the majors' most homer-friendly places.

But it's the pitching that's getting the most plaudits.

Lohse (2-0) has made impressive starts in Florida's summery warmth and Cincinnati's April chill. He took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a 4-1 win in Miami last Wednesday, allowing only one run and two hits.

With temperatures in the 40s on Tuesday night, he was in control again, allowing Joey Votto's sacrifice fly and four hits in six innings. Lohse took a little while to adjust to the vastly different conditions in his second start.

"It's tough," Lohse said. "You're not going to get the same feel of the ball. You get a feel for what the ball is going to do. It was cold and a little windy."

Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte retired the last nine batters in order, with Motte getting his second save in two chances.

The Cardinals rotation has been sensational so far, going 5-1 with a 1.86 ERA.

"Thank you!" Freese said. "It's unbelievable. We're going to win a ton of games when our starters are doing that."

The Reds handed out another big contract before the game, giving second baseman Brandon Phillips a deal through 2017 worth $72.5 million. It came only five days after Votto got an additional 10 years and $225 million, looking to turn the 2010 NL Central champions into a consistent contender.

Phillips got a cramp in his left hamstring during a 7-1 loss to the Cardinals on Monday night and is expected to miss several days.

For the second game in a row, the Cardinals got to a Reds starter before he could break a sweat. They hit three homers in the first inning off Homer Bailey on Monday night.

Beltran hit Leake's fifth pitch into the stands in right field. Leake escaped another big Cardinals first inning by getting Yadier Molina to ground into a double play with the bases loaded. Molina also grounded into a double play with two runners aboard in the eighth.

Lance Berkman, who has the most homers by a visiting player at Great American, tripled into the right-field corner in the sixth. Freese followed with his third homer, a drive that bounced off the top of the wall in right field and caromed up into the stands.

Leake thinks the Cardinals are just as formidable without Pujols, who left as a free agent for the Angels after the World Series championship.

"It's still a difficult lineup," Leake said. "They lost a big name, but they're still a threat."

Berkman left the game in the eighth with tightness in his left calf, which started bothering him after he ran out his triple.

Zack Cozart hit his second triple of the season in the bottom of the inning and scored on Votto's sacrifice fly, making it 3-1.

NOTES: LHP Jaime Garcia starts the final game of the series for St. Louis. He's 6-1 in his career against the Reds with a 3.13 ERA. He has given up more than three runs only once in his seven starts against Cincinnati. ... RHP Johnny Cueto makes his second start for Cincinnati. He pitched seven innings in a 4-0 opening win over Miami last Thursday. ... SS Rafael Furcal was out of the Cardinals' starting lineup for the first time, getting some rest. ... Reds RH reliever Nick Masset, who started the season on the 15-day DL with a sore shoulder, hasn't started throwing yet.

Plus, an alien invasion, a poignant doc, and a couple of Blu-rays.

We've got a relatively unremarkable week on home video, so the list will be pretty short. To kick things off, we've got Meryl Streep's latest award-winning effort, an artsy erotic drama, an alien invasion flick that got no love, and Werner Herzog's latest documentary (he's so good at those, isn't he?). Wrapping things up are two reissues: the Elia Kazan film that made Brando a star and the complete box set of a strange daytime soap from the '60s. See below for the full list!

Do Painting Companies in Houston TX Install Hardiplank? | All-Tex ...

Some painting companies in Houston TX do only that ? paint houses. But some of the most recognized names in the home improvement field in Houston offer other services, too. One such service is Hardiplank installation.

Hardiplank is fiber cement siding from the James Hardie brand. They are one of the top manufacturers of home construction supplies, so if you want to play safe in your siding installation project, it is an excellent choice.

For those of you who are sold on the quality of Hardiplank siding, the next step is hiring someone to install the siding for you. This process does require the service of a professional, so unless you?ve had decades of experience in installing sidings, call a specialist.

Once you talk to your chosen contractor, one of the first issues you should talk about with them is caulking.

Caulking is the process of waterproofing seams or cracks in something. In this case, that?s your siding. To get the longest and best performance from your siding, you need to be sure that moisture will not have an easy time getting inside it.

With Hardiplank, the process of caulking starts even before installation. The joints where the siding will be installed should be caulked well. After that, the Hardiplank can be installed, in accordance with the literature that comes with the siding, and you will have to make sure that everything around the siding (like window and/or trim) is caulked well.

Of course, the good thing about hiring a professional is that you won?t have to worry about the right measurements and processes involved in caulking Hardiplank. This does not mean though that you shouldn?t try to be involved in the process. In fact, it is highly recommended that you ask questions and try to learn about waterproofing your siding as much as possible.

Want to know more about Hardiplank? Talk to one of the best painting companies in Houston TX. Call (888) 669-1806 today.

Dad's Shop Wall - Family Woodworking

Jim,
That is the main breaker for the sub-panel. It is fed by two 30 amp breakers in the Main Panel for the entire house. I'm not quite sure even I can understand what I just wrote. Therefore I will try again: In the main electric panel for the house are two 30 amp breakers, one from each leg in the box. These two 30 amp breakers are tied together. These 30 amp breakers feed the sub-panel. The sub-panel came with the 100 amp breakers already installed.

I think of the 100 amp breakers as part of the wire that goes to the real breakers (30 amp) in the original house electric panel. So, in effect, what I have is 10 gauge wire going from the sub-panel to 30 amp breakers in the main house panel. This is a good example of where a drawing would be worth a thousand words. Any way the result is that the sub-panel would trip if it received a 30 amp load....JimB

JimB,
I see two possible solutions to this situation:

1. Since the two panels are so close together, replace the 30 amp breakers in the sub panel and the garage panel with something larger than the 30 amps (like maybe 50 0r 60 amps?) and run appropriately sized wiring betwixt the two; or,

2. Just get rid of that 100 amp breaker in the garage panel and replace it with a dual 30 to match the other panel.

BTW, if I read you right, you don't have a double pole 30 in the sub panel - you have two separate 30 amp breakers? If that's true, you definitely have an illegal - and potentially dangerous - hook-up. The feeding breaker should be a double-poled one, not two singles.

As Rob has already said, though. 30 amps ain't really enough. Running lights and a tablesaw or an bandsaw or a planer, etc., and a dust collector at the same time will be pushing the limits of the 30 amp breaker(s) in the sub panel, and will also be affecting the performance of both running machines. Time to blow the cobwebs off that wallet and upgrade the electrical a bit, Jim.

Teens ignore melanoma risk to tan for prom

Courtesy of Mary Eckert

Mary Eckert holds up the yellow dress she bought to wear at prom.

By Becky Bratu, msnbc.com

With prom still about a month away, Mary Eckert has already found the perfect yellow floor-length dress, but she says she's behind on her tanning schedule.

"Girls already started, it's crazy," Eckert, a junior at a high school in Manheim, Pa.,?told mnsbc.com.

She plans to start tanning next week by spending 12 minutes on a tanning bed every other day or so.?Her yellow dress will look better on tanned skin, Eckert said.

"I think people just look better when they're tan," she added.

The prom and tanning go hand-in-hand,?but the practice has come under?renewed scrutiny after a?recent study published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings found the incidence of melanoma in young adults has soared, with a sixfold increase in the past 40 years. The rise is particularly noteworthy in young women?ages 18 to 39, where the incidence of melanoma increased eightfold from 1970 to 2009, and fourfold in young men.

?The number one thing ? stop going to go tanning beds,? dermatologist Dr. Jerry Brewer, one of the study?s authors, told NBC News. ?All correlations point toward that as the reason for the increase.?

For young women, melanoma rates on the rise

In a statement released last week, the Indoor Tanning Association called the study "a leap of pure speculation."

"There is no consensus among researchers regarding the relationship between melanoma skin cancer and UV exposure either from the sun or a sunbed," the association said.

While the dress remains the pi?ce de r?sistance of prom night,?hairstyle, makeup and glowing skin are seen as essentials to complete a perfect look for a very special night.

'Everybody's going to do it'
Tanning sessions are not cheap, but salons offer student specials, 2-for-1 offers or package deals. Eckert pays $27 for a monthly membership that allows her to go daily, if she chooses. She said she pays for it herself from the money she earns working at a grocery store.

"I know that everybody's going to do it for prom," she said, including some boys.

Eckert says she's aware there are some health risks that come with tanning, but "I just do not think about that because it makes me nervous."

If her skin gets burned, she said, she puts on aloe or lotion. "Even if I burn, when I peel I get dark," she added.

Jean O'Reilly

Ann Hinrichs says her turquoise dress will look great on her natural skin color.

People get pressured into tanning?because so many teens do it,?Ann Hinrichs, a junior at a high school in Fridley, Minn.,?told msnbc.com. She says she's never tanned indoors?because skin cancer runs in her family, and added that she doesn't understand the appeal. Some girls, she said, just end up looking orange.?

"It just doesn't look natural," Hinrichs said.

There have been efforts in several states to limit indoor tanning for minors. Minnesota introduced a special tax on tanning and last year California enacted a law prohibiting those under 18 from indoor tanning. Illinois, Utah, Michigan, Arizona, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut are considering similar bans.

For many teens, however, tanning is a way of life, not just another step in preparation for prom. Eckert said she's had her salon membership for about three months, though she doesn't plan on going often after prom. In the summer, she says, she tans on the beach every day.

"When I tan, it makes me feel better, you know?" she said.

For her part, Hinrichs says her turquoise dress will look great on her natural skin color.

"One night shouldn't completely change the way I look," she added.

(AP) ? Turkmenistan's authoritarian leader has proven he doesn't only win elections easily, coming first in a car race he wasn't even supposed to take part in.

President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov drove to the racing track in a Bugatti sports car Saturday morning ostensibly to give his blessing to the former Soviet Central Asian nation's maiden automotive competition.

While an event presenter introduced the president, he received a request nobody in Turkmenistan would be likely turn down. "Can I take part?" Berdymukhamedov asked.

Before long, the president had changed into racing gear, entered the zippy and diminutive Turkish-made Volkicar automobile and promptly proceeded to record the best time in the time-trial challenge.

Announcers at the race said the winning car will be given to the national sports museum.

The apparently choreographed display appears to be another episode in an ongoing state project to cast the president as an effortlessly competent man of action.

Berdymukhamedov initially favored a low-key style after taking power in the wake of his eccentric predecessor Saparmurat Niyazov's death in late 2006, but his public persona has become subject of an increasingly grand mythology. He won presidential elections in February with 97 percent of the vote.

His choice to travel to Saturday's race in a Bugatti was in stark contrast with his preferred mode of transport during the elections, when he drove to a polling station with his family in a cramped Soviet-era Zhiguli ? a car much derided in the West for its unreliability.

The government is loudly proclaiming the need to turn Turkmenistan into a sporting power at the behest of the fitness-obsessed president, and the race was touted as the opening salvo in the country's plan to develop competitive automotive sports.

The energy-rich desert nation, which gained independence amid the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, has never won a medal in the summer Olympic Games.

Berdymukhamedov's predecessor, Niyazov, was celebrated in a cult of personality that saw cities, streets, months, periodicals and public organizations after the leader and his family members and made a two-volume spiritual tome he wrote mandatory reading.

In a vein reminiscent of Niyazov's title of Turkmenbashi, or father of all Turkmens, state media now routinely refers to Berdymukhamedov as Arkadag, which is Turkmen for protector.

Isn't it "marvelous"? Obama seeks to define Romney for voters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When President Barack Obama criticized Mitt Romney by name this week for embracing a controversial Republican budget proposal, he worded his attack carefully and with bite.

"(Romney) said that he's 'very supportive' of this new budget, and he even called it 'marvelous' -- which is a word you don't often hear when it comes to describing a budget," Obama said during a speech on Tuesday, before adding:

"It's a word you don't often hear generally."

The desired effect was clear: tie Romney directly to mostly unpopular plans for budget cuts and emphasize that the former executive is out of touch by lampooning his use of a seemingly out of date adjective.

After watching quietly while Republican candidates fought each other, Obama is now trying to define his likely opponent in November as an out-of-touch multi-millionaire who would cut social programs for the elderly and the middle class while promoting policies to help the rich.

Obama's riff on Romney's use of the word "marvelous" to describe Representative Paul Ryan's budget plans carried a subtle message.

"It's a word you kind of associate with the upper class, and I think that the intention was to tweak Romney for being wealthy and, you know, sort of brought up in the kinds of circles where they would say ?marvelous,'" said Kenneth Sherrill, a political science expert at New York's Hunter College.

"That's trying to get under his skin a little bit."

The attack - which Obama repeated at a fundraiser on Thursday night - is a sign of things to come.

Obama's campaign has worked steadily to construct an image of an insensitive and patrician Romney even before he wins the Republican nomination, hoping to create a caricature that sticks with voters once the election officially becomes a two-man race.

Romney has made similar efforts to define Obama, portraying him as unprepared and unable to handle the country's economic challenges. And he began the process earlier, deliberately focusing his critiques on the president rather than the other Republican challengers.

The back and forth is a foreshadowing of what is likely to be a very nasty campaign. Hunter College's Sherrill said both candidates were likely to get very negative.

"This will be a spectacularly aggressive and negative campaign in the general election," he said. "I think that the principals - the candidates themselves - are going to go after one another pretty strongly."

NASTY CAMPAIGN AHEAD

Yet former constitutional law lecturer Obama can only go so far with charges that Romney is an elitist.

"It looks to me like what Obama's trying to do is two things: one is run on class warfare ... and (two) just demonize his opponent," said Charlie Black, a former adviser to 2008 Republican nominee John McCain who is now advising Romney.

"A president who's also wealthy and went to Harvard is not going to win on class warfare."

Obama's campaign is already drawing contrasts in areas where it perceives Republicans to be weak. Obama regularly brings up his support for immigration reform at political fundraisers, a dig at Romney's hard line against illegal immigration.

Hispanics, who could provide the swing votes needed to win battleground states such as Colorado and Nevada, largely back Obama in polls.

His campaign is also targeting women, another critical voting bloc that Democrats want in their column.

Obama spoke at a conveniently timed forum on women and the economy at the White House on Friday, making reference to influential women in his life as well as his appointment of two women to the Supreme Court.

This line seems to be working. Polls show support for Obama among women is increasing, while Republicans have lost ground due to conservative stances on birth control.

On healthcare, Obama advisers gleefully describe the president's 2010 reform law as modeled on Romney's own effort in Massachusetts, reminding conservative Republicans of the candidate's moderate past

Obama will also bring renewed attention on Tuesday to the so-called "Buffet rule," a measure to raise taxes on the wealthy, which Republicans oppose.

"Obama's smart enough to know ... (that) many people in the public are perceiving Romney as an elitist who does not have sympathy for workers or the poor," said Mark Rom, an associate professor of government at Georgetown University.

"Anything he can do to reinforce that image, he'll take the opportunity to do."

But with unemployment still high and job creation advancing only slowly, Republicans see an opening, no matter how much Obama defines himself as a middle class champion.

"Middle class voters want to see economic growth and more jobs. They're anxious about the future of our economy," said Romney adviser Kevin Madden.

"Middle-class Americans have lost faith in President Obama because his basic message in this economic slowdown is that 8 percent unemployment is the new normal, and other rising cost pressures like high gas prices and rising health care costs are all someone else's fault."

The reason noticeably mainly a new required protein in the kittys spit and skin tone termed Felis Domesticus but most consumers call it Fel H 2 to maintain the application short. An epidermis human gland known as the sweat gland delivers the idea. Given that many dog dog breeds include this kind of glandular they both will make hypersensitivity in their managers. While the frizzy hair, pet pollen as well as urine via pet cats could yield reactions within consumers, Fel In A will be the largest source of kitty provided bring about. It is particularly small , sweaty chemical, much smaller as compared to particles or maybe pollen. It can be in all places that any kitten have been that will hold off in an airplane for quite a while following on from the kitty leaves. Surprisingly, Fel Deborah A single has been based in the Antarctic a distance through the best pet cat.

Not one but two dog dog breeds for example are improved accepted simply by allergic reaction afflicted individuals. Typically the Sphynx reproduce is virtually wholly hairless poor that individuals purpose lesser number of allergic reactions with many people. HTC One X vs One S: which phone is The One for you?
Jet Li starred in a 2001 movie called "The One." In it, his character traveled to parallel universes and grew stronger as he killed alternate versions of himself. This continued on until there was only one other copy left, with the movie culminating in an epic battle between the two. We won't spoil the ending, but we were reminded of this movie when thinking about the One X and the One S: both are incredibly powerful phones that we'd be proud to use as our daily drivers, but the vast majority of us are only able to choose one One. (The One V is also a possible option but for the purposes of this feature we're laser-focused on HTC's two higher-end models.)

How can we make a sound decision? The two phones are considered premium devices with top-notch components and relatively few flaws. The major difference, however, is going to be the price. Naturally, the cost will vary depending on where you live and which carrier you choose, but make no mistake: the S is going to be less expensive. Is it worth spending the extra money to go with the top-shelf model, or will the little guy be plenty? Now that the two devices are officially on sale in Europe, it's time to pick a side. We can't decide for you, but our goal is to present each phone's pros and cons, going round by round. Which one is right for you? Read on to find out.

Dr. Chris Tomshack Has A Heart For Business

Dr. Chris Tomshack is the CEO of HealthSource Chiropractic and Progressive Rehab. At the heart of his business is zeroing in on what's best for the patient. Prior to his franchise success, Dr. Tomshack graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic; his vision was to always do what is best for the patient.

Dr. Tomshack started his first HealthSource clinic in Vermilion Ohio where he, his wife Lisa and his Rotweiller lived above the clinic where Chris saw patients, Lisa greeted them and took X-rays. Business was initially sluggish and while Dr. Tomshack's goals never changed, it took time and implementing some business basics to really launch his practice.

Years later and HealthSource Chiropractic and Progressive Rehab is a leading franchise opportunity with more than 300 clinics across 42 regions that has surpassed every other franchise in its category.

The secret for HealthSource has always been to offer not just an acceptable product but a phenomenal product.

Michael Tomshack, the late father of Dr. Chris Tomshack was an avid businessman, entrepreneur and manager who persuaded his son to enroll in business courses while at Ohio University. His father drilled into him that he could never expect to sit behind his desk and succeed. In order to obtain real success he would have to become his work ethic, know his patients and know his trade. The goal is not just growth itself because without a substantial product you're not really succeeding.

Dr. Tomshack is enthusiastic about his progressive rehab program that educates its patients on how to live injury-free. Patients are taught exercises at the clinics with the goal of being independent and returning to active living.? The exercises can eventually be done at home helping the patient to return to a more sustainable regimen.

HealthSource is also playing a new and vital role in the development of younger and newer chiropractors.

Business courses are offered to help these doctors prepare for the business ownership part of running a clinic and LaunchU was created to help recent graduates, and soon-to-be doctors, preparing them with a reliable road map to success.

HealthSource has grown into a successful franchise because of its patient-centric focus and progressive business approach. Dr. Tomshack foresees prolonged expansion with over 1,000 clinics in the next five years. Now that's progressive.
