Red Flags: How to Tell if Your Interns are a Good Fit

Most companies have already started, or have even finished, hiring summer interns. Sadly, many times, the intern who shows up on the first day is not the person represented in the r?sum? or throughout the interview. Employers should be able to spot and correct early warning signs, as well as be prepared to teach new interns the tricks of the trade in order to create a successful work environment for the intern and your company.

Two definite signs that an intern is not going to work out are a lack of questions and tardiness. Alone, each shows that the intern is not committed to the job and has no interest in improvement. Together, they?re dangerous to the company. Additionally, today?s college students spend a lot of time with texting, Twitter, and Facebook. Oftentimes, this leads to young professionals not understanding the difference between work time and personal time. It?s a clear warning sign of impending trouble when interns cannot abide by these workplace rules. Other deal breakers include inappropriate language, a distasteful attitude, and inappropriate behavior. Being insensitive and rude only contributes to a hostile work environment. All of these can be corrected if clear boundaries are set in the very beginning on what?s considered appropriate use of time and conduct in a professional workplace. Much of this can be avoided by providing mentoring and coaching for the intern so he can work and learn professional protocol in a non-threatening manner.

Many of the issues interns struggle with are little ones, which can be corrected through coaching. Simple guidance on routine tasks eases the transition between student and intern quite a bit. The good intern is new to the environment and wants to do things correctly in order to add value to the company ? she just isn?t sure how to go about it. It?s important to teach interns the business communication style used in the workplace, particularly considering it will be relatively new to most. Interns should use a professional email address, instead of one like juicy18@gmail.com. Often, they will also need to be guided through the use of appropriate abbreviations in written correspondence. While ?LOL? is great for texts and tweets, using it in a workplace memo could result in the next sexual harassment seminar being conducted by HR. Backgrounds, wallpapers, and religious sayings should also be edited out of email formats and signature blocks; they should be replaced with the intern?s full name in order to maintain a professional and non-offensive environment. Though interns are mostly college students and have been writing and rewriting papers for their entire school career, be sure to emphasize the fact that they must proofread before hitting the ?send? button. (While they?re at it, make sure they realize they need to double-check the recipients listed before sending. Some of the biggest workplace blunders have happened that way ? save an intern some embarrassment.)

Business clothing is another aspect where I?ve seen it all. I have had to explain to college students that business casual does not mean your cargo shorts simply need to be khaki-colored. What college students sometimes fail to understand is that the impression they make will last. Dressing too casually will result in them simply not being taken seriously. Their image and personal brand starts with dress, as it is the first thing someone notices about a person when introduced ? and there will be a lot of introductions being made in a new internship. Be sure to instill the guidelines provided by the University of Missouri?s Trulaske College of Business; it will make a world of difference.

Business Casual

  • Men: Should avoid khaki pants and shirts with loud prints. Consider dark-colored slacks with a nice Oxford shirt with muted colors and a conservative matching tie. If the weather is cold, pull on a nice, solid-colored sweater. Another option is wearing dark slacks, a solid or bold-line shirt, and a nice, dark-colored sport coat or blazer. Belt and shoes should match.
  • Women: Should consider wearing business skirts with appropriate blouses, such as silks, polyester, or rayon with attractive prints. Nice slacks with a blazer, or pants suits, are also acceptable. Larger pieces of jewelry are acceptable for nice casual. Flats or small heels are appropriate, and of course, always wear pantyhose.

Casual

  • Men: It?s acceptable for men to wear nice khaki, navy, or some other basic color slacks. Polo-type shirts, ?camp? shirts, or collared shirts (long- or short-sleeved) would be appropriate. Stay away from denim and sweatshirt material. Shirts should be crisp and colorful, but not ?neon-looking.? No cut-offs or jean shorts.
  • Women: Appropriate attire for women might be a skirt and blouse, or tailored slacks, a blouse, and a nice belt with attractive, coordinated flats. No cut-offs or jean shorts.

While it may seem interns are the most likely to mess up, companies need to be aware of times when they?re taking advantage of unpaid interns. The primary concept behind an internship is to educate the intern and give him some experience in a particular field. Benefiting the employer is a secondary extra. According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, interns must receive beneficial training that mirrors what could be received in a vocational school. They are not legally allowed to perform the duties actual employees are supposed to be doing, such as stuffing envelopes.

College prepares the student to enter the workforce, but it doesn?t prepare them for the connections and interwoven workings of an actual company ? this is where an internship comes in. Providing a work environment that teaches the intern the standards and expectations of the business world allows you to guarantee a successful worker will be entering the workforce in the future. Remember: someone?s intern will eventually end up working for you, so guide your interns with the reality that they?ll be someone?s employee someday. It will be free advertising for your company ? and it will certainly help your karma.

APSU Lady Govs Track and Field's Chantelle Grey set to compete in ...

?

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsJacksonville, FL ? Austin Peay State University junior Chantelle Grey is prepared to compete in the 800 meter at the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships East Preliminary Round , being held Thursday-Saturday at North Florida?s Hodges Stadium.

Chantelle Grey

Grey, who owned the Ohio Valley Conference?s best time in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.72, is Austin Peay?s only participant in the region. She will be a part of six heats of eight 800 meter runners that will run Thursday night. The top three runners from each heat will qualify for the second round along with the nine next fastest times. From there, those three heats will advance the top three finishers, plus the next three fastest times for the championship heat.

?We have a definite race plan for the first round,? APSU coach Doug Molnar said. ?If she can execute it, she has a good chance of advancing.

?We haven?t seen the official heat sheets yet, but we have a good idea of who is in her heat and we think we have a strategy that will move her through the first round.?

Grey transferred to Austin Peay after spending two seasons at Montana. She provided a lift to a young Lady Govs program, excelling in the 800 better than any Lady Govs since Sheena Gooding. She also participated in both the 1500- and 400-meter runs.

?When we talked about her first season at APSU last summer, we talked about her being in this position and that we have a two-year plan for her,? Molnar said. ?So far she is right on schedule for what we had envisioned.

?Now we?d like to extend the ride a bit longer. At this point it is all about just executing your plan and not trying to do something extraordinary. If she can run equal to her season best she can make it to the next round and from there who knows.?

Shooting beyond the Moon: "Part-Time" Scientists Aim to Develop Autonomous Rover to Compete for Lunar X PRIZE

Extreme Tech | Technology

A 100- member team of experts aims to develop quick-response rover technology they hope will alter the way robots explore the moon and beyond

Some people try to make the most of their spare time by exercising, volunteering or simply recharging their batteries. Others like to use that time to build robots that can be blasted to the moon and then set free to roam the lunar landscape. A group of engineers and researchers calling themselves Team Part-Time Scientists have chosen the latter, and are building a moon rover named Asimov they hope will win the coveted Google Lunar X PRIZE by early 2014.

As the name implies, at least half of Part-Time Scientists' 100 members are holding down full-time jobs at industrial firms or universities. They are competing against 25 other teams to be the first to land a robotic rover on the moon and have it travel 500 meters over the? surface, sending high-definition images and data back to Earth as they go.

Part-Time Scientists' goals are representative of all the teams entering the competition?they are aiming for something more lasting than the $20-million first prize. After guiding Asimov beyond the 500-meter mark, the team plans to switch the rover into autonomous mode for the rest of its lunar exploration, making it the first bot built by anyone to navigate on the moon without human intervention. In addition, the team plans to be the first to use ultrafast graphical-processing units (GPUs)?known for their ability to render complex graphics for video games and scientific simulations?to help their Earth-bound command systems, Asimov's landing vehicle and possibly Asimov itself gather, assess and act on information in as close to real-time as possible.

Autonomous travel is part of Part-Time Scientists' strategy to design and test new technologies that could impact not just future moon travel but other interplanetary endeavors as well. "We don't want to develop something specific for the moon that ultimately is of no use to anyone else," says team founder Robert B?hme, who works as a cyber security advisor for the German government in Berlin. "We want to take useful technology with us and test it on the moon, which is one of the reasons the robot rover will operate autonomously."

Other teams are developing autonomous technology for similar reasons, including Astrobotic Technology, Inc., led by legendary bot-maker William "Red" Whittaker, and the Juxtopia Urban Robotics Brilliant Application National (JURBAN) not-for-profit research organization. Astrobotic's landing system will navigate autonomously by aligning real-time data from cameras and laser with existing satellite imagery of the moon. Meanwhile, JURBAN, like Part-Time Scientists, is designing its rover with autonomous capabilities.

Going for a touchdown
All the Lunar X PRIZE competitors have access to images and data collected by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) as well as from previous manned trips to the moon. Still, Asimov will not really know the specific terrain it needs to cross until it touches down on the lunar surface, says Wesley Faler, the team's chief software developer. Based near Detroit, Faler's day job is writing software, including programs for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"In those last few minutes before landing, we'll be getting a tremendous amount of video data from the moon," Faler says. In addition, the landing vehicle that will set Asimov down on the surface has integrated force-feedback sensors that can analyze soil composition around the landing area. "We're hopeful this combination of visual and tactile data will [yield] an unprecedented level of lunar detail," he says.

Asimov is to land somewhere in the vicinity of the Apollo 17 site, which has fine soil and few large rocks that might impede the rover's progress. "We have an algorithm that calculates rock density that shows we can do a lot of exploring without getting into any trouble, such as getting stuck trying to get around [a rock]," B?hme says. Much of what scientists know about this site comes from the original mission as well as LRO flyovers.

Despite all of the preparation that goes into a moon landing, teams cannot be entirely certain of where their rovers will actually touch down. "We're relying on relatively low-resolution data ahead of the mission and may later find out that there are bumps there that would tip over the lander," Faler says. B?hme adds, "You need to make adjustments as you go, and to make those adjustments you need information."

Move over, rover
The GPUs should give Asimov a distinct advantage over prior rovers, even those NASA has on Mars. The rovers there have performed commendably since setting down on the Red Planet in 2004, but Spirit (when it was operative) and Opportunity (which is still active) must pause frequently to gather, assess and act on information about their surroundings, B?hme says. The rovers require nearly three minutes to process a pair of images?a delay that causes them to move at an average speed of about one centimeter per second.

HBT: Rangers' Feliz out until All-Star break

UPDATE: According to Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said earlier this evening that Feliz has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He won?t throw for four weeks, but he could be shut down for longer.

7:36 PM: The Rangers placed Neftali Feliz on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon with right elbow inflammation. While an MRI revealed no structural damage in the elbow, it will be a while before we see him back in the big leagues.

According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said this afternoon that Feliz will be shut down for a month. He?ll resume a throwing program after that, but assuming that he?ll likely need at least a couple minor league rehab starts, that places his return somewhere around the All-Star break. And that?s assuming no setbacks.

Feliz, who is making the transition from closer to starting pitcher, has a 3.16 ERA and 37/23 K/BB ratio over 42 2/3 innings this season. Scott Feldman will fill his spot in the starting rotation for now.

Tips And Tricks For Living A Better Life | The Secret & the Law of ...

Your goals for personal development should be precise enough so that you are able to enjoy success. If you have a list of specific goals you want to accomplish, you will have an easier time traveling along the path to success. If you are focused on your goals, then the obstacles between you and them will be easier to overcome.

Stress is the foe of happiness. You are harming yourself mentally and physically when there is too much stress in your life. So that we think clearly and work toward our goals in life, it is important that we eliminate stress from our minds. Schedule in relaxation times throughout the day, clearing your mind in a peaceful setting. This refreshing time can improve your self-image and peace.

Have a humble perspective. In the grand scheme of things, our lives are relatively insignificant. Everyone has gaps in their understanding, and can benefit from the wisdom of others. Keep this in mind and remember to stay open to new possibilities. Having an open mind to new situations will show you how much more there is to know.

If you are falling short of your goals, take a moment to step back and determine where you have gone wrong. Do some research online for examples of goals and ideas that are similar to yours, then compare your own goals to your findings. You might discover that your aim is too high, you are missing something, or you are not putting enough into it.

Leaders are humble, though powerful and strict too. A strict attitude is required but advice should be given in a caring way. To succeed in leadership, one must practice fairness and uphold virtue.

You can?t care for others if you?re not caring for yourself. Take time for rest and relaxation, whether your health is good or poor.

Try to be content with developing and enhancing your existing strengths. Remember that everyone is unique, and do not feel bad if you are not the best at everything. You should concentrate on talents you currently have rather than worry about those you do not possess at this point.

Become a more well-rounded person by developing your leadership qualities. While there are multiple ways to define leadership, most people regard it as influence. Identify the leadership qualities you possess. What are the significant events in your life that have shaped you into who you are today? What changes have occurred thanks to these events? Which one of your attributes is most influential in making you a good team player? By asking yourself these questions, you can become more aware of how you best fit into a team.

These tips, even if you apply only a few, can help you stay motivated on your journey to personal development. It may seem like a ton of work, but just knowing that you?ve got some great advice to help you out can help you do it joyfully.
