Regarding Passbook

Regarding Passbook

I joked today that Passbook was this year's Newsstand. I meant that on several levels. First, it's an app that people seem to be struggling to use. Second, it's an app that depends on being fed content that's out of Apple's control. Third, because of those two factors, it's an app that could have done with some better hand-holding and partnership placements at launch.

Rewind. Passbook was introduced, along with the rest of iOS 6, at WWDC 2012 in June. Apple Senior Vice President of iOS, Scott Forstall explained it as "the simplest way to get all of our passes in one place" -- a single, easily accessible repository for all the gift cards, coupons, tickets, and other assorted passes that were previously scattered among a myriad, less easily accessible apps. He explained it as the solution to a well defined usability problem.

In his subsequent demo, Forstall showed Passbook pre-populated with content from several well known brands, including Apple, Starbucks, Target, United, MLB, and the W Hotel. Forstall also showed gate updates, Lock screen notifications, and shredding passes when they were no longer needed. He did not, to the best of my recollection, show the process of acquiring a pass or actually using it.

Immediately after the WWDC keynote, I spoke to other members of the media and their reaction, like mine, was optimistic and positive. The QR codes that would serve as the bridge between the passes and the retailers seemed antiquated, of course, but many of us simply assumed they were a placeholder or stepping stone towards what would eventually be a more elegant mobile transaction-based solution.

As the iPhone 5 event approached, many people, myself included, began speculating about what else we might see. Apple typically has a couple of unique demoes at the iPhone events, which often coincide with iPhone TV commercials that follow. Passbook seemed like a good candidate. It seemed like something Apple could really show off. A couple of key partnership announcements, like a Starbucks or Target, and a demo of a pass being purchased and used seemed perfectly possible. Passbook, some of us thought, could even be a candidate for this year's Santa-themed iPhone ad, following up the FaceTime and Siri ads from previous years. Santa buying some last minute toys with Passbook powered gift certificates -- what could be better than that?

Instead, at the iPhone 5 event, we got a re-demo of Passbook from WWDC. No partner announcements. No transactional demos. Admittedly, a lot of the apps that could potentially feed Passbook were and remain dismal -- little more than websites in thin app wrappers with inexcusable interfaces and frustrating transactional experiences. And scanning a code is positively, primitively, unsexy ( especially compared to what other platforms are doing with rapid, touch-and-go data exchange technologies like NFC). Not the stuff of great iPhone event demos.

There was also nothing like FireMonkey and Real Racing 3, however, nothing where Apple brought some hip, marquee retailers to Cupertino -- those who did have great looking apps and existing pass systems -- and gave them some special attention, and helped them make something truly brilliant to show off at the event.

Still, developers, including major retailers who already had apps in the app store, or had websites or even marketing mail that could deliver Passbook passes, had had from June until the iOS 6 release date of September 21 to work with the various betas and get something amazing ready. After all, while big ships turn slowly, they still turn, and 3 months is a fair amount of turning time to create a way to push resource files, a bit of JSON, and existing scan codes.

And if three months really wasn't enough time to get app development done, scanners installed, and staff up to speed to support Passbook passes, Apple themselves just happen to be a hip, marquee retailer with an existing pass system (Apple Store Gift Cards), a great looking app, and the ability to scan codes. Forstall even showed an Apple Store gift card off during the Passbook demos. So I held to hope.

Then iOS 6 was released, and Passbook immediately got off to a rocky start. First, the Passbook app started users off with an empty shelf (or in this case, wallet) experience. Sure, Music.app starts off empty of music, but digital music is an old, established, understood paradigm and, since the Store button was integrated, an easy one to engage.

iBooks on the other hand, which is a more recent addition, cleverly started off with a free Winnie the Pooh book. It created a comfortable path of entry for users. Immediately upon launching it iBooks, it gave users something recognizable, something they could play with, something they could use to learn about the iBooks experience. It de-stressed the process and brought users quickly up to speed on the feature set. "Hey, here's something you can play with and if you like, here's how to get much more!" is inherently a better usability, after all, than "hey, here's a big empty thing that you can go figure out how to get stuff for and then figure out how to us!"

Passbook presented itself like Newsstand -- empty but for directions to the App Store. And worse, for some users, the App Store portion took hours if not days to start working following the release of iOS 6. Like it or not, first impressions matter, which is why Apple is usually so purposeful and so clever about nailing them. Users will try something new once, twice, maybe a few times, and if it doesn't work, or if it's confusing, they'll soon stop trying and give up on it.

As much as people take issue with Apple's controlling nature, they complain even more when things don't work, and often the things that don't work are the things outside Apple's control. When the iPhone launched, and for many years thereafter, it was bad carrier service in the U.S. Last year it was old media empires that were ploddingly slow and technologically inept when it came to producing Newsstand content to begin with -- and that was after Apple and Fox held a special event to show off The Daily as a launch title.

Passbook didn't even have that. No Winnie the Pooh. No pre-populated Apple Store pass. No comfortable path of entry.

I've now used Passbook several times, and successfully so. I downloaded the Cineplex Mobile app and have used it to buy a few movie tickets. It is, as I feared, a website in a thin app wrapper with an inexcusable interface and frustrating transactional experience. Ugly and imprecisely, I've been able to purchase tickets using my Paypal account and get passes generated and loaded into Passbook. From then on, from the moment Passbook and Apple took over, the experience has been great. I've been alerted. I've been updated. I've been able to shred.

Everything has worked fantastically well -- as well as Scott Forstall showed off at WWDC 2012 and again at the iPhone 5 event. But when I've had to have the Passbook passes scanned at the movie theater and get the actual tickets (because the passes aren't the actual tickets, they're the thing you use to get the ticket...(?!)), it's been unsexy, and its been a part of the process entirely outside of Apple's control.

With Newsstand, Apple didn't go the iTunes or iBooks route, didn't establish a specific format and present the content is a consistent manner. They outsourced to publishers, and the experience suffered. With Passbook, Apple didn't offer the iTunes transaction system, didn't establish a specific process in a consistent manner. They outsourced to retailers, and the experience suffered.

When I joked that Passbook was this year's Newsstand, a bunch of people immediately replied that at least they could hide Passbook in a folder, unlike like Newsstand (which is a folder). That's not the sentiment you want to hear.

If Apple had gone with the Winnie the Pooh model from iBooks, they could have pre-populated Passbook with an Apple Store card. Some have suggested including a nominal amount of credit on it, since it would be returned to the Apple Store anyway. But even absent an existing balance, it could have been used to show how Passbook works, how money could be added to the card using a great app like the Apple Store app, and a great transactional service like iTunes. It could have provided users with an excellent first Passbook experience and excellent first impression. Even if other Passbook feeder apps were abysmal, that experience would have balanced the scales.

A year later, I'm still waiting for Newsstand to get better. Or, preferably, for Apple to Ping it and replace it with "iNews". I'm not sure if I'm waiting for Passbook to be replaced with a more consistent, more controlled "iWallet". I expect it to eventually, though not immediately. Right now I'm waiting and hoping for Passbook to get better. Matt Brian of The Next Web has shown how Apple is promoting Passbook using iAd, which may help, and Matthew Panzarino, also of The Next Web has shown how Apple is pushing Passbook passes from OS X Safari to iOS. Those are good steps.

Siri, which was announced as a beta, struggled with uptime and reliability at launch, but Apple has stuck with it, improved it, and extended it. That's not surprising, because natural language interface is a hugely important part of the future. Mobile transaction payments are just as important, so it won't be surprising if Apple sticks with Passbook, improves it, and extends it as well.

Apple just needs to do it quickly and compellingly enough that iPhone users don't stick Passbook in a folder and forget about it.

When Do We Become Truly Conscious?

120831_SCI_ultraSoundChild Left: An ultrasound of the author's daughter at 20 weeks. Right: Lalana, the author's daughter, at age 2.

Courtesy Daniel Bor.

It is easy to view consciousness as a kind of magic. In religion it is represented by the mysterious soul, and in science the concept of consciousness at first appears quite alien. But many fields, such as the study of what distinguishes life from nonlife, had their earlier magical states eroded by careful scientific study. Consciousness is in the midst of a similar revolution.

The investigation of our own awareness is a blossoming scientific field, where experiments are illuminating exciting details about this most intimate of scientific subjects. In my book The Ravenous Brain, I describe the latest consciousness science and how we are closing in on establishing a consciousness meter?a way to measure levels of awareness in any being that may be able to experience the world. Consciousness is in many ways the most important question remaining for science.

But the nature of consciousness is not just a vital question for science; it?s also the source of some of society?s thorniest, most fundamental ethical dilemmas.

On a personal level, consciousness is where the meaning to life resides. All the moments that matter to us, from falling in love to seeing our child?s first smile, to that perfect holiday surrounded by snow-capped mountains, are obviously conscious events. If none of these events were conscious, if we weren?t conscious to experience them, we?d hardly consider ourselves alive?at least not in any way that matters.

Whether I?m reveling in a glowing pleasure or even if I?m enduring a sharp sadness, I always sense that behind everything there is the privilege and passion of experience. Our consciousness is the essence of who we perceive ourselves to be. It is the citadel for our senses, the melting pot of thoughts, the welcoming home for every emotion that pricks or placates us. For us, consciousness simply is the currency of life.

Although some philosophers and scientists suspect that consciousness is a pointless side effect of cognitive processes, I believe the opposite: that our consciousness might indeed be responsible for our greatest intellectual achievements in both the arts and sciences. Whether our creativity and insight originates in our unconscious mind or not (I believe that the role of the unconscious has been overestimated), at the very least, our consciousness is the conduit to inspect these gems of inspiration and the driving force for turning them into reality.

It is not surprising, therefore, that questions about consciousness lie at the heart of many of our most fundamental ethical debates, one of which is abortion and the right to life. This is an appropriate point for me to play my proud father card and slip in a couple of pictures of my daughter, Lalana. The ultrasound was taken halfway through pregnancy, at 20 weeks. Soon after this scan, we could clearly feel her kicking.

The second image is a recent photo of her. As a 2-year-old, Lalana runs around everywhere and has a vocabulary of a few hundred words. She can convey events to us that happened days or weeks before, usually because she is still so excited about them. She can also store wishes for the future. For instance, we might tell her offhand that when we get home, we?ll play with making bubbles. Hours later, as soon as she enters the house, she?ll run straight to the shelf with the bubble bottle and scream, ?Bubbu! Bubbu!? She has a strong set of loves and hates, and her emotionally sensitive, passionate, cheeky, disturbingly stubborn personality is already pronounced.

Car Window Replacement ? Doing it Yourself | ArticlePDQ.com

As a car ages, there are several things that will certainly go wrong with it. You can guess that ultimately you will have trouble with one of the windows. Understanding the ins and outs of vehicle window replacement can save you quite a bit on money, if you do your homework. Most people would not consider exchanging one themselves because of insurance. But even though you?ve insurance you may do yourself to it and save filing a claim. Besides, with deductibles you?ll likely turn out ahead, anyway. It is not that hard, so long as you?ve a few basic tools and plenty of patience. The initial thing to think about is which kind of window you?ve. When you yourself have the kind that rides in a body then it is easier than other styles. The first thing to do is take away the handle and armrest, if relevant. Next, you?ll take away the inside door cell from the door. This is done by inserting an appartment screwdriver between your two elements and gradually prying. There are plastic fasteners that support the two together, and are spread every half foot or so.Next, look carefully at the glass in the doorway. Make sure there is number damage everywhere. Also, consider the installation of the system and make notes of anything that looks difficult. If you need to, draw a plan of it. Better to understand how all of it goes back together than to have to guess.Along the back side of the glass you will likely see a plastic plug that connects the supply to the glass. This supports the glass in place and allows it to experience in the correct place as the window raises and lowers. Take out this plug, eliminate the glass and clear the monitor and slide arm completely. Connect your brand-new glass the exact same way and then check your window. Ensure every thing is in working order before you proceed. You are now able to replace the doorway cover, and the armrest and handle. As you can easily see, carrying out a car window replacement is pretty simple, as long as you manage the glass properly, and double check all your actions as you go.

(AP) ? There were a few scattered reminders of whose room it had been before the bombs hit ? a framed picture of Barbie and another of a kitten with a pink bow still hanging on the cracked plaster wall, a doll and two teddy bears resting on a pile of rubble.

The house was one of more than a dozen in the al-Harah al-Qibiliyah neighborhood in the town of Azaz, north of Aleppo, to be destroyed in an Aug. 15 airstrike. Survivors and rights groups say more than 40 people, including children and old people, were killed.

On his first trip back to his brother's home, Mahmoud Makour sifted through the rubble of what remained. He collected the stuffed animals and a few Lego pieces that belonged to his 11-year-old niece, Sara, and his 1 ?-year-old nephew, Youssuf, and set them aside. Both children, along with their mother, were killed in the air raid, he said.

"Are these the toys of terrorists?" Makour asked. "That war criminal Youssuf, he was a war criminal! He was a year and a half old. He was conspiring against (President) Bashar Assad, that child!"

He then gently placed the toys on a slab of debris, unsure what to do with them next.

Over the past week, survivors and relatives have returned daily to collect from the rubble what can be salvaged. They also relive the day of the airstrike.

As Ahmad Khairo tells it, he had just returned home from his barber shop when the bombs hit.

"As I stepped into my house I felt the ground shaking under my feet and the door opened by itself and I fell to the ground," the 37-year-old said. "I heard the sound of my wife screaming."

He picked himself up and rushed inside to check on his family. His mother was unconscious. After she came to, she quickly recited the Muslim declaration of faith.

"She thought it was the apocalypse," Khairo said.

Youssuf Dannoun used to own a clothes shop, but has been unemployed since he stopped paying rent on the store and people stopped worrying about buying clothes. With a bloody civil war engulfing the country, survival now takes precedence.

On the day of the airstrike, Dannoun recalls being with his wife on the roof of their one-story house while he fixed their water barrel.

"Suddenly I noticed the jets and within few seconds, a light followed by dust and enormous pressure threw me back from the roof onto the ground," he said. "My wife tried to hold onto a metal bar, which went through her arm, but luckily she was lightly injured and I was hurt in my leg but nothing serious."

Dannoun, his wife and four children all survived the bombing.

Africa: The Beat - The Hollywood Reporter

The Bottom Line

Nonstop music and the filmmakers' avoidance of overinterpretation make Tanzania-set doc a pleasure

Venue:

Montr?al World Film Festival, Documentaries of the World

Director:

Samaki Wanne collective

MONTREAL ? A mesmerizing chunk of musical anthropology that's deeper and more specific than the usual global eye/ear candy, Africa: The Beat observes a year in "the heart of Tanzania" and finds a community where, the filmmakers claim, not a single minute of life passes without music. Though more substantive than something like Baraka, it also lacks the spectacular cinematography that draws auds to those films; what its modest video cameras capture, though, will be appreciated by ethnography-minded festivalgoers.

The product of four-person collective Samaki Wanne, which includes only one professional filmmaker (the other members are two musicians and an artist), the doc chooses and sequences material based mostly on musical appeal: Its opening shot, of women rhythmically pounding corn, segues smoothly to clips of singing and other daily rituals. Viewers may suspect they're in for a long-form music video in which editing is dictated solely by a clip's beats-per-minute reading.

Not so. The doc's editor soon proves to have both an attention span and a methodology: The film follows the pulse of time, from sunrise to night and from one dry season through heavy rains and harvest.

The film is fascinated by the ways this tribe, the Wagogo, does almost nothing without a song, chant, or tapped beat to accompany it. (This habit isn't unique to them, of course, but musicologist Javier Arias Bal assures us it's more pervasive here than elsewhere.) It showcases plenty of impromptu work songs and the like, but also sets aside ample time for more formal music and dance, with straightforward titles indicating the purpose or meaning of each event.

If outside threats or internal strife ever afflict this village, we don't hear about it. The doc is so positive-minded it doesn't even include songs of grieving, which one assumes must be a significant part of the Wagogo repertoire. The omission may look Pollyannaish to some, but seems the natural result from artist-filmmakers smitten by the creative output of this community, not looking to convince viewers to write a check for charity.

Source: NY probing equity firms, including Bain

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? An official familiar with the probe says New York's attorney general is investigating some of the nation's largest private equity firms, including Bain Capital, founded by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the probe. It is examining whether the firms used a tax strategy to avoid paying hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes. The practice involved converting some fees collected for managing accounts into fund investments, resulting in a lower tax rate.

The New York Times first reported the investigation of more than a dozen firms. Tax experts tell the Times they have differing views about the strategy's legality.

Though Romney collects benefits as a Bain retired partner, the inquiry isn't focused on the time he ran Bain.

No. 9 S. Carolina runs to 17-13 win over Vandy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? The ninth-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks turned in one of the ugliest passing nights for a Steve Spurrier-coached team to open up the 2012 season. Good thing the old ball coach had Marcus Lattimore back and Connor Shaw turning in a gutsy performance with a bruised shoulder.

Lattimore ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns, while Shaw added 92 yards to help South Carolina rally and pull out a 17-13 win Thursday night over Vanderbilt.

"Our guys didn't give up and I think we're in pretty good shape, but man I hope we can play a lot better offensively next week," Spurrier said.

South Carolina came in with high expectations after going 11-2 last season and finishing second in the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division. Then Lattimore fumbled on his first carry, and Shaw had his first pass intercepted to go with a penalty in the Gamecocks' first four plays of the night. It got worse when Shaw took a helmet on the back of his right, throwing shoulder late in the first half.

He went to the locker room where he said he took "some medicine." The junior quarterback missed the first two series of the second half before returning and didn't get South Carolina across midfield until the go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter.

"It wasn't too pretty, but we'll take the win, especially against Vanderbilt in this place," Shaw said.

Spurrier said Shaw's shoulder was bruised but not dislocated. Spurrier said Shaw even assured him he could pick up a first down inside the final minute to make sure the Gamecocks ran out the clock to seal the win.

"He'll be sore for a while. I think he should be OK. Had some nice runs there. He was hurting a little bit. That's what it took," Spurrier said.

The Commodores came up with three sacks and forced two turnovers, and they outgained South Carolina 276-272 in total offense. But South Carolina had a 115-17 advantage in the fourth quarter, and the Commodores turned it over on downs for the final time with 1:47 left when Jordan Matthews couldn't handle a fourth-down pass from Jordan Rodgers. Gamecocks defensive back D.J. Swearinger appeared to grab Matthews' arm before the ball arrived.

It's yet another botched call by officials for Vandy fans to put into their long list of grievances.

"You did know the SEC just came out with very clear rules about talking about the officials and what happens after games," Vanderbilt coach James Franklin said when asked about the play. "'Trying to get me fined?"

Matthews refused to comment on the no-call, though he waved his arms looking for a flag.

"I've got to get more open," Matthews said.

The Gamecocks also got five sacks, and Shaq Wilson came up with an interception to end a Vandy scoring threat that set up Lattimore's first TD, a 29-yarder in the first quarter.

"I hated that happening, but I just had to forget about it," Lattimore said of his fumble. "After a few runs, I started to feel like myself again."

Spurrier used three different quarterbacks, including senior Seth Strickland, who's only on the depth chart as a holder, when Shaw shuffled to the sideline holding his right arm close to his side to protect his aching shoulder. South Carolina finished with 67 yards passing, a poor showing for a Spurrier-coached team.

"We couldn't get much passing, so we had to at least try to run and get a touchdown or two and let our defense play," Spurrier said. "And fortunately, our defense held them to 13."

Even with the ugly start, South Carolina jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Vanderbilt came right back with 10 straight points to tie it up going into halftime.

Rodgers threw a 78-yard TD pass to Matthews in the second quarter as Vanderbilt scored 10 straight points. Carey Spear put Vanderbilt ahead 13-10 with his second field goal, a 44-yarder, with 6:51 left in the third quarter.

Shaw, who now has won nine of his 10 starts, came back into the game with 6:02 left in the third quarter. He went three-and-out himself before putting together the game-winning drive. The big play was a 20-yard pass to Justice Cunningham. Officials flagged Vanderbilt cornerback Andre Hal for hitting a defenseless receiver above the shoulder, knocking Cunningham's helmet off.

"We had one of the worst passing nights we've ever had, but Justice Cunningham made a huge catch and got a penalty on top of it," Spurrier said.

Hal tried to make up for the penalty with a 52-yard kickoff return, but the Commodores punted it back after going three-and-out to lose momentum.
