ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? Neither births nor deaths stop the flocking of organisms. They just keep moving, says theoretical physicist John J. Toner of the University of Oregon. The notion, he says, has implications in biology and eventually could point to new cancer therapies.

Picture any scenario in which self-propelled organisms -- animals, birds, bacteria, molecules within cells, cancer cells, fish, and even tiny plastic rods on a vibrating table -- move as a swarm or flock in the same direction. Eighteen years ago, Toner co-developed two equations that together provide a complete theory of flocking for "immortal" flocks -- those in which creatures are not being born and dying while the moving.

Now he has extended that work to include the effects of birth and death.

The new equations are as complete a description of flocks as the Navier-Stokes equation is of fluid dynamics. This equation, named after French physicist and engineer Claude-Louis Navier and British scientist George Gabriel Stokes applies equally well to all fluids; air, water, honey and the oil from the Gulf of Mexico disaster are all described by it. All of the differences between these very different fluids can be incorporated into the Navier-Stokes equation by changing the value of one number, called "the viscosity." Large values apply to sticky fluids like honey and oil, while smaller values describe air and water.

The Navier-Stokes equation has been used successfully for more than a century in the design of aircraft, automobiles, plumbing and power stations.

Toner's equations likewise work for all flocks, and contain some numbers that must be adjusted to account for differences between different kinds of flocks. The earlier work on immortal flocks has been applied to the flocking behavior of birds, particularly studies of starlings in Rome by Andrea Cavagna and Irene Giardina.

In a new paper -- "Birth, Death, and Flight: A Theory of Malthusian Flocks," published in the Feb. 24 issue of the journal Physical Review Letters -- Toner shows that flocking is even robust against birth and death. The finding, he said, is especially important for many other organisms that flock, especially bacteria, which may contain millions of individuals that are constantly dying and being replaced by the reproduction of others as the swarm moves.

"A flock can keep moving in the same direction for times much longer than the lifetime of any individual member," said Toner, a member of the UO Institute of Theoretical Science and a professor in the physics department. "Individuals are being born and dying but their direction and motion can persist much longer than the lifetime of any individual creature."

Secondly, he added, the density changes of such a "mortal flock" -- where some members are leaving by death and joining by birth -- create persistent but predictable fluctuations. "Birth and death are very important in microbiological flocks, such as swarms of bacteria or in collections of self-propelled molecules that flock in most living cells."

This fundamental new knowledge already is applicable to understanding the movement of molecules within cells -- in particular, mitotic spindles that launch the machinery of cell development and division, Toner said.

In mitotic spindles, individual molecules live for only about 20 minutes, but spindles live and continue their work for days, he said. "The motion continues as dead molecules are replaced by newly synthesized molecules, as well as by molecules which immigrate in to take their places."

Through the application of his new theory to the study of mitotic spindles, Toner said, it may be possible to design specifically targeted cancer therapies that, unlike current chemotherapies, would only kill aberrant, or diseased cells, and allow desirable, healthy ones to live. "In reality, such applications are a long way off," said Toner, whose research is supported by the National Science Foundation.

"This study shows us how fundamental physics and mathematics deployed to explain an everyday occurrence in nature can spin off with potentially life-saving medical applications," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, vice president for research and innovation at the UO. "This cutting-edge research conducted at the University of Oregon is another great example of the widespread applications and potential benefits that basic research and the promise it holds to address the real problems of today and tomorrow."

In September, Toner will embark on a one-year sabbatical to do additional research on flocking, or collective behavior, at IBM Yorktown Heights and the University of California, Berkeley, under a fellowship from the New York City-based Simons Foundation.

How does modesty keep us living longer? First what is modesty?

So what is modesty? There is a seemingly cute but exceedingly wise statement in the Talmud?Bavli?Tractate?Eruvin 100b ?"If the Torah had not been given, we would have learned tzni'ut (modesty) from a cat."

It is easy to read to ignore wrongs done to us, but hard to learn how to do. Ask yourself, are you really doing the mitzvoth, the duties of the heart of loving God with all your heart, with all of your soul and with all your might? Do you sincerely try to do what is right and just while at home, at work, and on the street? Are you letting your eyes go astray and worshipping other gods, like the god of money, or the god of lust, or the god of ego? Do you try to keep God in your conscience throughout the day? Do your actions make you a good teacher to others?

The above is the way to say the prayer with kavenah. Saying it aloud with fellow congregants as if it were a mantra or some pledge of Jewish allegiance is not kavenah.?? Maimonides (in the Guide for the Perplexed, Part 3, Chapter 51) expresses this point directly: "Do not pray moving your lips with your face to the wall (as if you are engaged deeply in prayer) and all the while you are thinking of your business transactions . . . Do not think you have achieved anything (by doing these things)." My best prayers are not communal, but at home, in quiet, where God can hear me and I can hear Him.

You can say your tephila prayers silently if you wish. Psalm 65:2 says: "To You silence is praise." Each morning, you should consider the day ahead. If you know, for example, that you have a company office party to attend and the sin of gossip (lashon ha ra) is on your chesbon ha nefesh gadol, ask yourself how well you have been avoiding this defect and ask God to help you avoid this defect when you attend the party.

Speaking of gossip, the Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi I. Kagen teaches that lashon ha ra murders not only the subject of the gossip, but the one who gossips and those who listen as well. We have a prayer specifically for this sin in Talmud Tractate Beracoth 16b-17a: "May God guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking guile." This is also found is Psalm 34:14.

If ego and showing off are character defects of yours, ask God to "let your name be like dust to everyone." The less you concern yourself with prestige, the less you will let selfishness interfere with your service to God, to your fellows, and to daily spiritual growth and self-improvement. You will also be able to ignore barbs, snubs and insults from others, as they will mean nothing to you.

Remember, prayer is a lifelong process. You will find that the practice evolves over time. As you learn the prayers, you will find some that you like and stay with them. Others, you may not like as much and choose to not say them. This is fine, so long as you are saying your prayers with kavenah. You can pick prayers that you like from our prayer books, or from the TaNaK, especially psalms, or even other spiritual texts.

By continually self judging and striving to do better will keep us from having a life that is hell, Gehenna, on Earth.

Psychotherapy May Ease Hot Flashes After Breast Cancer (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Feb. 14 (HealthDay News) -- After breast cancer treatment, many women suffer from hot flashes and night sweats, but a type of "talk therapy" might relieve these symptoms for some women, British researchers suggest.

In a new study, women who received this form of psychotherapy, known as cognitive behavioral therapy, had reduced their symptoms by half within six months.

"Hot flashes and night sweats are distressing symptoms, which cause social embarrassment and sleep problems, and they are challenging to treat, especially for women who have had breast cancer" because hormone replacement therapy is generally not recommended for these women, explained lead researcher Myra Hunter.

According to background information in the study, which is published in the Feb. 15 online edition of The Lancet Oncology, 65 percent to 85 percent of women have hot flashes after breast cancer treatment.

Group cognitive behavioral therapy is a safe and effective treatment for women who have hot flashes and night sweats following breast cancer treatment, Hunter said, with additional benefits to mood, sleep and quality of life.

"The women in this trial reported frequent and problematic symptoms and relatively low quality of life," said Hunter, a professor of clinical health psychology at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry.

Hunter's team randomly assigned 96 women who had been treated for breast cancer and suffered from night sweats and hot flashes to either "talk therapy" or usual care.

The 47 women who received the therapy attended weekly 90-minute sessions for six weeks. For the others, usual care consisted of access to nurses and oncologists, telephone support and cancer support services, the researchers noted.

The therapy sessions included psycho-education, paced breathing, and behavioral strategies to manage hot flashes and night sweats, as well as interactive PowerPoint presentations, group discussion, handouts and weekly homework, Hunter said.

In addition, participants learned how to handle the stress associated with hot flashes and night sweats, and found new ways to decrease anxiety, she explained.

The women were also taught to manage hot flashes in social situations and to understand night sweats and improve sleep habits using mental and behavioral strategies.

The investigators found that the women who had received the cognitive behavioral therapy significantly reduced the number of hot flashes and night sweats they experienced in the nine weeks after the start of the study.

This reduction in symptoms lasted for 26 weeks. At nine weeks there was a 46 percent reduction in symptoms and a 52 percent reduction at 26 weeks, Hunter's team found.

However, among women receiving usual care, hot flashes and night sweats decreased by 19 percent after nine weeks and 25 percent after 26 weeks.

"These reductions were sustained and associated with significant improvements in mood, sleep and quality of life," Hunter said. "This is a safe, acceptable and effective treatment option, which can be incorporated into breast cancer survivorship programs and delivered by trained breast cancer nurses."

Holly Prigerson, director of the Center for Psycho-Oncology and Palliative Care Research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, wrote an accompanying journal editorial.

"Hot flashes and night sweats are very common, distressing and persistent -- women reported being troubled by them for an average of two years after breast cancer treatment," Prigerson said.

She noted that the new study provides sound evidence upon which to recommend cognitive behavioral therapy for breast cancer patients suffering from these symptoms.

"Adaptations to an online, self-management version of the intervention would allow for more flexible scheduling and greater access at potentially lower cost of delivery," Prigerson said. "Combining the intervention with medications that effectively treat hot flashes and night sweats might produce the most dramatic effects with reductions in symptoms as well as the distress caused by them."

Prigerson said this type of therapy might also be used to treat postmenopausal women suffering from these symptoms.

"Of course, scientifically, we can't generalize beyond the sample of women who experience menopausal symptoms as a result of treatment for breast cancer," she said. "But given that they found that [this type of therapy] worked on the distress associated with hot flashes and night sweats, then it would seem likely to generalize to menopausal symptoms experienced outside of this context."

You may not need to put a lot of effort into making someone's day today, but Google didn't skimp when it came to its Valentine's Day doodle, a heart-warming animated interpretation of the archetypal boy-meets-girl story ??with a happy ending, naturally.

Set to Tony Bennett's version of the Hank Williams' classic "Cold, Cold Heart," the doodle creates a love story out of that endless pursuit to capture the object of a boy's affection?? in this case, a little girl jumping rope. The boy, of course, employs every tactic he knows, using Google (naturally) to try to woo his love. But this is no material girl. At the end, he finds out all it takes is joining her on the ropes to win her heart.

The doodle's animator, Michael "Lippy" Lipman, told The Washington Post's Comic Riffs that the short plays on the universality of love. ?These characters are archetypes, with no dialogue, so it can play around the world.?

Lipman, a doodle newbie, created the Flash video with Google designer?Willie Real?(a doodler who previously honored pioneer geneticist Gregor Mendel)?and shared his inspiration for the piece.??That was every girl I met up until college ... The little girl who couldn?t see the magic within [me] ? she had many faces.?

The video ends with a collage of couples, including two men in tuxes, a significant inclusion in light of Washington?governor Chris Gregoire signing into law a bill that legalizes gay marriage in the state.

This animated short joins a long line of doodles that have entertained millions and pushed the tribute envelope, such as the birthday wishes for Freddie Mercury,?the?dancing Martha Graham-inspired mini-performance, the?animated interpretation of John Lennon's "Imagine," Alexander Calder's moving mobile and the?playable/recordable Les Paul guitar.?
