Paul Ryan: ?College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms?

TAMPA -- Paul Ryan worked on this speech for weeks.

The Republican vice presidential candidate used his remarks to the 2012 Republican National Convention as an opportunity to introduce his family, promote Mitt Romney's vision for economic recovery, draw contrasts with President Barack Obama and profess the role of faith in his life. He even dropped in a quick line about Led Zeppelin, his favorite band.

Ryan tore into Obama's federal health care law that passed in 2010, the president's most prized legislative accomplishment. Ryan revived an attack from the campaign trail, accusing the president of passing the law "at the expense of the elderly" by trimming the growth in Medicare spending to pay for it. Between the men on the Republican ticket, Ryan is perhaps the better candidate to address health care, given Romney's support for a state-based proposal with similar provisions.

Ryan also made an enthusiastic appeal to young voters, attempting to tie Obama's policies to the unemployment rate among college graduates.

"College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms," Ryan said, "staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life." He went on to paint the future of Americans as an "adventureless journey," that relies on government programs from cradle to grave.

At times, Ryan overstepped, appearing to blame Obama for the closing of a plant in his district that shut down before the president even took office. When he railed against Obama's stimulus program, a massive infusion of government spending that passed in the president's first 100 days in office, Ryan neglected to mention that his own office requested that funds be directed to help businesses in his home state.

As a whole, Ryan portrayed a country that isn't better off than it was four years earlier, one that moves from crisis to crisis without an end in sight.

"It began with a financial crisis; it ends with a job crisis," Ryan said of Obama's first term in office. "It began with a housing crisis they alone didn't cause; it ends with a housing crisis they didn't correct."

The speech, which gave Ryan more exposure to voters than he's ever had in his public career, will likely set the tone for how Romney's campaign will use him for the rest of the fall campaign.

Mr. Chairman, delegates, and fellow citizens: I am honored by the support of this convention for vice president of the United States.

I accept the duty to help lead our nation out of a jobs crisis and back to prosperity ? and I know we can do this.

I accept the calling of my generation to give our children the America that was given to us, with opportunity for the young and security for the old ? and I know that we are ready.

Our nominee is sure ready. His whole life has prepared him for this moment ? to meet serious challenges in a serious way, without excuses and idle words. After four years of getting the run-around, America needs a turnaround, and the man for the job is Governor Mitt Romney.

I'm the newcomer to the campaign, so let me share a first impression. I have never seen opponents so silent about their record, and so desperate to keep their power.

They've run out of ideas. Their moment came and went. Fear and division are all they've got left.

With all their attack ads, the president is just throwing away money ? and he's pretty experienced at that. You see, some people can't be dragged down by the usual cheap tactics, because their ability, character, and plain decency are so obvious ? and ladies and gentlemen, that is Mitt Romney.

For my part, your nomination is an unexpected turn. It certainly came as news to my family, and I'd like you to meet them: My wife Janna, our daughter Liza, and our boys Charlie and Sam.

The kids are happy to see their grandma, who lives in Florida. There she is ? my Mom, Betty.

My Dad, a small-town lawyer, was also named Paul. Until we lost him when I was 16, he was a gentle presence in my life. I like to think he'd be proud of me and my sister and brothers, because I'm sure proud of him and of where I come from, Janesville, Wisconsin.

I live on the same block where I grew up. We belong to the same parish where I was baptized. Janesville is that kind of place.

The people of Wisconsin have been good to me. I've tried to live up to their trust. And now I ask those hardworking men and women, and millions like them across America, to join our cause and get this country working again.

When Governor Romney asked me to join the ticket, I said, "Let's get this done" ? and that is exactly, what we're going to do.

President Barack Obama came to office during an economic crisis, as he has reminded us a time or two. Those were very tough days, and any fair measure of his record has to take that into account. My home state voted for President Obama. When he talked about change, many people liked the sound of it, especially in Janesville, where we were about to lose a major factory.

A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: "I believe that if our government is there to support you ? this plant will be here for another hundred years." That's what he said in 2008.

Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that's how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight.

Right now, 23 million men and women are struggling to find work. Twenty-three million people, unemployed or underemployed. Nearly one in six Americans is living in poverty. Millions of young Americans have graduated from college during the Obama presidency, ready to use their gifts and get moving in life. Half of them can't find the work they studied for, or any work at all.

So here's the question: Without a change in leadership, why would the next four years be any different from the last four years?

The first troubling sign came with the stimulus. It was President Obama's first and best shot at fixing the economy, at a time when he got everything he wanted under one-party rule. It cost $831 billion ? the largest one-time expenditure ever by our federal government.

It went to companies like Solyndra, with their gold-plated connections, subsidized jobs, and make-believe markets. The stimulus was a case of political patronage, corporate welfare, and cronyism at their worst. You, the working men and women of this country, were cut out of the deal.

What did the taxpayers get out of the Obama stimulus? More debt. That money wasn't just spent and wasted ? it was borrowed, spent, and wasted.

Maybe the greatest waste of all was time. Here we were, faced with a massive job crisis ? so deep that if everyone out of work stood in single file, that unemployment line would stretch the length of the entire American continent. You would think that any president, whatever his party, would make job creation, and nothing else, his first order of economic business.

But this president didn't do that. Instead, we got a long, divisive, all-or-nothing attempt to put the federal government in charge of health care.

Obamacare comes to more than two thousand pages of rules, mandates, taxes, fees, and fines that have no place in a free country.

The president has declared that the debate over government-controlled health care is over. That will come as news to the millions of Americans who will elect Mitt Romney so we can repeal Obamacare.

And the biggest, coldest power play of all in Obamacare came at the expense of the elderly.

You see, even with all the hidden taxes to pay for the health care takeover, even with new taxes on nearly a million small businesses, the planners in Washington still didn't have enough money. They needed more. They needed hundreds of billions more. So, they just took it all away from Medicare. Seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars, funneled out of Medicare by President Obama. An obligation we have to our parents and grandparents is being sacrificed, all to pay for a new entitlement we didn't even ask for. The greatest threat to Medicare is Obamacare, and we're going to stop it.

In Congress, when they take out the heavy books and wall charts about Medicare, my thoughts go back to a house on Garfield Street in Janesville. My wonderful grandma, Janet, had Alzheimer's and moved in with Mom and me. Though she felt lost at times, we did all the little things that made her feel loved.

We had help from Medicare, and it was there, just like it's there for my Mom today. Medicare is a promise, and we will honor it. A Romney-Ryan administration will protect and strengthen Medicare, for my Mom's generation, for my generation, and for my kids and yours.

So our opponents can consider themselves on notice. In this election, on this issue, the usual posturing on the Left isn't going to work. Mitt Romney and I know the difference between protecting a program, and raiding it. Ladies and gentlemen, our nation needs this debate. We want this debate. We will win this debate.

Obamacare, as much as anything else, explains why a presidency that began with such anticipation now comes to such a disappointing close.

It began with a financial crisis; it ends with a job crisis.

It began with a housing crisis they alone didn't cause; it ends with a housing crisis they didn't correct.

It began with a perfect Triple-A credit rating for the United States; it ends with a downgraded America.

It all started off with stirring speeches, Greek columns, the thrill of something new. Now all that's left is a presidency adrift, surviving on slogans that already seem tired, grasping at a moment that has already passed, like a ship trying to sail on yesterday's wind.

President Obama was asked not long ago to reflect on any mistakes he might have made. He said, well, "I haven't communicated enough." He said his job is to "tell a story to the American people" ? as if that's the whole problem here? He needs to talk more, and we need to be better listeners?

Ladies and gentlemen, these past four years we have suffered no shortage of words in the White House. What's missing is leadership in the White House. And the story that Barack Obama does tell, forever shifting blame to the last administration, is getting old. The man assumed office almost four years ago ? isn't it about time he assumed responsibility?

In this generation, a defining responsibility of government is to steer our nation clear of a debt crisis while there is still time. Back in 2008, candidate Obama called a $10 trillion national debt "unpatriotic" ? serious talk from what looked to be a serious reformer.

Yet by his own decisions, President Obama has added more debt than any other president before him, and more than all the troubled governments of Europe combined. One president, one term, $5 trillion in new debt.

He created a bipartisan debt commission. They came back with an urgent report. He thanked them, sent them on their way, and then did exactly nothing.

Republicans stepped up with good-faith reforms and solutions equal to the problems. How did the president respond? By doing nothing ? nothing except to dodge and demagogue the issue.

So here we are, $16 trillion in debt and still he does nothing. In Europe, massive debts have put entire governments at risk of collapse, and still he does nothing. And all we have heard from this president and his team are attacks on anyone who dares to point out the obvious.

They have no answer to this simple reality: We need to stop spending money we don't have.

My Dad used to say to me: "Son. You have a choice: You can be part of the problem, or you can be part of the solution." The present administration has made its choices. And Mitt Romney and I have made ours: Before the math and the momentum overwhelm us all, we are going to solve this nation's economic problems.

And I'm going to level with you: We don't have that much time. But if we are serious, and smart, and we lead, we can do this.

After four years of government trying to divide up the wealth, we will get America creating wealth again. With tax fairness and regulatory reform, we'll put government back on the side of the men and women who create jobs, and the men and women who need jobs.

My Mom started a small business, and I've seen what it takes. Mom was 50 when my Dad died. She got on a bus every weekday for years, and rode 40 miles each morning to Madison. She earned a new degree and learned new skills to start her small business. It wasn't just a new livelihood. It was a new life. And it transformed my Mom from a widow in grief to a small businesswoman whose happiness wasn't just in the past. Her work gave her hope. It made our family proud. And to this day, my Mom is my role model.

Behind every small business, there's a story worth knowing. All the corner shops in our towns and cities, the restaurants, cleaners, gyms, hair salons, hardware stores ? these didn't come out of nowhere. A lot of heart goes into each one. And if small businesspeople say they made it on their own, all they are saying is that nobody else worked seven days a week in their place. Nobody showed up in their place to open the door at five in the morning. Nobody did their thinking, and worrying, and sweating for them. After all that work, and in a bad economy, it sure doesn't help to hear from their president that government gets the credit. What they deserve to hear is the truth: Yes, you did build that.

We have a plan for a stronger middle class, with the goal of generating 12 million new jobs over the next four years.

In a clean break from the Obama years, and frankly from the years before this president, we will keep federal spending at 20 percent of GDP, or less. That is enough. The choice is whether to put hard limits on economic growth, or hard limits on the size of government, and we choose to limit government.

I learned a good deal about economics, and about America, from the author of the Reagan tax reforms ? the great Jack Kemp. What gave Jack that incredible enthusiasm was his belief in the possibilities of free people, in the power of free enterprise and strong communities to overcome poverty and despair. We need that same optimism right now.

And in our dealings with other nations, a Romney-Ryan administration will speak with confidence and clarity. Wherever men and women rise up for their own freedom, they will know that the American president is on their side. Instead of managing American decline, leaving allies to doubt us and adversaries to test us, we will act in the conviction that the United States is still the greatest force for peace and liberty that this world has ever known.

President Obama is the kind of politician who puts promises on the record, and then calls that the record. But we are four years into this presidency. The issue is not the economy as Barack Obama inherited it, not the economy as he envisions it, but this economy as we are living it.

College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life. Everyone who feels stuck in the Obama economy is right to focus on the here and now. And I hope you understand this too, if you're feeling left out or passed by: You have not failed, your leaders have failed you.

None of us have to settle for the best this administration offers ? a dull, adventureless journey from one entitlement to the next, a government-planned life, a country where everything is free but us.

Listen to the way we're spoken to already, as if everyone is stuck in some class or station in life, victims of circumstances beyond our control, with government there to help us cope with our fate.

It's the exact opposite of everything I learned growing up in Wisconsin, or at college in Ohio. When I was waiting tables, washing dishes, or mowing lawns for money, I never thought of myself as stuck in some station in life. I was on my own path, my own journey, an American journey where I could think for myself, decide for myself, define happiness for myself. That's what we do in this country. That's the American Dream. That's freedom, and I'll take it any day over the supervision and sanctimony of the central planners.

By themselves, the failures of one administration are not a mandate for a new administration. A challenger must stand on his own merits. He must be ready and worthy to serve in the office of president.

We're a full generation apart, Governor Romney and I. And, in some ways, we're a little different. There are the songs on his iPod, which I've heard on the campaign bus and on many hotel elevators. He actually urged me to play some of these songs at campaign rallies. I said, I hope it's not a deal-breaker Mitt, but my playlist starts with AC/DC, and ends with Zeppelin.

A generation apart. That makes us different, but not in any of the things that matter. Mitt Romney and I both grew up in the heartland, and we know what places like Wisconsin and Michigan look like when times are good, when people are working, when families are doing more than just getting by. And we both know it can be that way again.

We've had very different careers ? mine mainly in public service, his mostly in the private sector. He helped start businesses and turn around failing ones. By the way, being successful in business ? that's a good thing.

Mitt has not only succeeded, but succeeded where others could not. He turned around the Olympics at a time when a great institution was collapsing under the weight of bad management, overspending, and corruption ? sounds familiar, doesn't it?

He was the Republican governor of a state where almost nine in ten legislators are Democrats, and yet he balanced the budget without raising taxes. Unemployment went down, household incomes went up, and Massachusetts, under Mitt Romney, saw its credit rating upgraded.

Mitt and I also go to different churches. But in any church, the best kind of preaching is done by example. And I've been watching that example. The man who will accept your nomination tomorrow is prayerful and faithful and honorable. Not only a defender of marriage, he offers an example of marriage at its best. Not only a fine businessman, he's a fine man, worthy of leading this optimistic and good-hearted country.

Our different faiths come together in the same moral creed. We believe that in every life there is goodness; for every person, there is hope. Each one of us was made for a reason, bearing the image and likeness of the Lord of Life.

We have responsibilities, one to another ? we do not each face the world alone. And the greatest of all responsibilities, is that of the strong to protect the weak. The truest measure of any society is how it treats those who cannot defend or care for themselves.

Each of these great moral ideas is essential to democratic government ? to the rule of law, to life in a humane and decent society. They are the moral creed of our country, as powerful in our time, as on the day of America's founding. They are self-evident and unchanging, and sometimes, even presidents need reminding, that our rights come from nature and God, not from government.

The founding generation secured those rights for us, and in every generation since, the best among us have defended our freedoms. They are protecting us right now. We honor them and all our veterans, and we thank them.

The right that makes all the difference now, is the right to choose our own leaders. And you are entitled to the clearest possible choice, because the time for choosing is drawing near. So here is our pledge.

We will not duck the tough issues, we will lead.

We will not spend four years blaming others, we will take responsibility.

We will not try to replace our founding principles, we will reapply our founding principles.

The work ahead will be hard. These times demand the best of us ? all of us, but we can do this. Together, we can do this.

We can get this country working again. We can get this economy growing again. We can make the safety net safe again. We can do this.

Whatever your political party, let's come together for the sake of our country. Join Mitt Romney and me. Let's give this effort everything we have. Let's see this through all the way. Let's get this done.

The Logic Breathing Life into Oreo's New Branding - Grant McCracken

Oreo recently stepped out with a new look. Several new looks, actually. The cookie is pictured sometimes in the shape of Elvis, sometimes with a tread mark in red cr?me in recognition of the Mars Rover landing, and sometimes in colors chosen to acknowledge Bastille day.

This is an excellent way to celebrate Oreo's 100 birthday, but it would be wrong to dismiss it as advertising's equivalent to party balloons. There is a method, perhaps even a genius, to this good humor.

Brand orthodoxy says that the brand should "keep it simple" and repeat itself constantly, like an old vaudevillian who doesn't mind doing his jokes over and over again because, hey, that's what got him here.

But there are new winds blowing in brand land. One of these came in the form of a book called The Cluetrain Manifesto, which proposed that branding should feel more like a conversation, a give and take between the consumer and the marketer.

This is an important idea because the consumer now appears to believe that the brand should earn its public attention the way all of us must. Say boring, repetitive stuff and you suffer the punishment that every bad conversationalist faces. First, we ignore you. Then, we exclude you.

There's a second metaphor we could use. I like to think of branding as breathing. It is taking in cultural meanings and giving them off. Inhale, exhale ? but in this case the stuff of respiration is not air but culture. Culture in, culture out. (There's no point of joining a conversation unless you've got something to say.)

Oreo turns out to be really respiratory. When it celebrates Elvis, the Mars landings, or Bastille Day, it comes alive to the world around it. Playful, even. After all, who celebrates French holidays? And the brand has recently taken on the image of the Liberty Bell, the Dark Knight, and the Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower. The first is classically American, the second is (was) absolutely of the moment, and the last gloriously obscure. So the brand escapes the solipsism, the self-absorption, the prison house most brands have imposed upon themselves.

Making brands vivid by making them conversational and respiratory is no small shift. It represents something very like a paradigm shift in marketing, setting several additional changes in train. Our brands and our marketing go from canned to complex, from prefabricated to dynamic, from the predictable to the experimental, from safety to risk. The old model of branding could "lock and load" the brand, assuming full control over what it was and the risks it represented. The new brand has to take on risk and the marketer must surrender control. This looks a horrifying until one realizing there is no place of safety. Sticking with the old branding is the path to irrelevance and tedium...and the effective death of the brand.

LG's Smart TV alliance grows, promises first crossplatform HDTV apps in September

The Smart TV Alliance consisting of LG and TP Vision (Philips) is still hammering away at its dream of platform-independent Smart TV apps, and as IFA 2012 gets under way it has a few new announcements. After promising Japanese manufacturers would join back in June it has welcomed Toshiba to the fold, as well as other supporters like Qaulcomm, Mstar, Onigo and YuMe. At IFA 2012, LG is showing off the first apps built to the original SDK 1.0 spec built by Accuweather, Eurosport, online music channel Vilanoise and others. It's not stopping there however, as the SDK 2.0 we'd heard about is still due before 2012 is out, and has been built to take advantage of the new more powerful SoCs that companies like Qualcomm (the S4 family) and Mstar can provide to HDTV manufacturers.

EAST LANSING, Mich. Computer viruses are constantly replicating throughout computer networks and wreaking havoc. But what if they had to find mates in order to reproduce?

In the current issue of Evolution, Michigan State University researchers created the digital equivalent of spring break to see how mate attraction played out through computer programs, said Chris Chandler, MSU postdoctoral researcher at MSU's BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action.

"This is actually a big question that still generates a lot of debate," said Chandler, who co-authored the study with Ian Dworkin, assistant professor of zoology, and Charles Ofria, associate professor of computer science and engineering. "People have some good ideas, but they can be hard to test really well in nature, so we decided to take a different approach."

The novel approach involved creating promiscuous programs in a virtual world called Avida, a software environment in which specialized computer programs compete and reproduce. Because mutations happen when Avidians copy themselves, which lead to differences in reproductive rates, these digital organisms evolve, just like living things, added Ofria, who created Avida.

The researchers programed the Avidians with the ability to grow sexual displays e-peacock tails of sorts. They also allowed them to choose mates randomly. As the researchers predicted, they usually went for the showiest mates. But why?

"One school of thought argues that the main benefit of choosing an attractive partner is that your offspring also will be sexy," said Dworkin. "In the other camp are those who argue that these sexual ornaments are a sign of good health, and so choosing a showy mate ensures that you'll get good genes to pass on to your offspring."

Traditionally, biologists thought that ornamental displays clue in potential mates about an individual's virility because the structures are costly, biologically speaking; only an animal in really good health could bear the burden they impose. So the researchers altered Avidians' genetic code to allow them to grow exaggerated displays practically for free.

They expected this change to diminish the evolutionary benefits of preferring showy mates, since even the wimpiest of Avidians could now grow enormous digital tail feathers.

"I was surprised when we didn't find that at all," Chandler said. "Even when we eliminated the costs of these displays, they still evolved to be an indicator of a male's genetic quality."

Inspirational - The History of Inspirational Sayings & Poems

Inspirational poems and quotes that are used by success training gurus in social media, email blasts and webinars are nothing new. In the 19th century, inspirational sayings and poems by authors such as Oliver Wendell Holmes and Julia Ward Howe stirred patriotism and motivated soldiers into battle.

Young women gained expectations of romance from Mary Shelly and William Wordsworth, who uplifted the souls of all that read their works. Up until WWII, poems by these and many other poets were read and studied by pupils of all ages. The poets were celebrities in their own right. Soon after the war, things began to change.

The Change in Poetry

Almost concurrent with the passing of the great American writer of motivational poetry, Robert Frost, the popularity of the art began to wane with books of poetry being replaced with paperback novels. Readers began to prefer reading about the sordid lives of the characters on pulp. The now unrecognized success training and self help motivators were forced into the coffee houses of Greenwich Village, the pubs of London and the corners of Haight Ashbury.

But shortly after, the reclusive butterfly of inspirational poems morphed and took flight powered by social unrest and the need for change. Much of it was put to music and names such as Dylan, Seeger, Edge and many others were asking disturbing questions and telling us where to find the answers. Because of these new inspirational poems and sayings, the word freedom was redefined and an awareness of taking from the planet without giving back began to spread.

How Poetry Plays a Big Part Today

With the rapid advances in electronic communication and an unstable economic world, personal development gurus are challenged to grab the attention of multitasking, highly stressed individuals who are hungry for inspirational sayings and poems as part of success training and for their spiritual well-being.

Utilizing the technology in this busier and smaller world, these personal growth motivators are sending inspirational poems through social media and internet marketing to reach out to this eager crowd. The difference is that the inspirational messages are no longer printed or played on vinyl. They are shown on motivational videos with music and moving pictures as an accompaniment. These are reaching thousands of people at a time who recognize the self help benefits and pass them on to friends who do the same and they become viral.

These inspiring quotes may be spiritual, motivational or patriotic. They show you that you were created to be great or that you should help those who are challenged. It reflects the beauty of nature or shows you how it has suffered. The one common thread; it is all good for you.

The Future of Inspiration

When you consider rap, you'll realize that the words are forms of inspirational poems that rose from the streets in urban neighborhoods. You must also consider how it can be used for the benefit of youth, provided that the messages are of a positive nature.

Many houses of worship are now using rap and hip hop to bring the youth in off the street and give them motivation and direction. There are many personal growth options for you to choose from but you should make sure that the website you obtain your motivational poetry from is reputable. It's best for you to take the time to read and ponder the meaning of the poems that you like. They will surely help you in your desire for a better and more successful life. Poetry has been helping people become inspired for centuries.

(AP) ? Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the voice of the United States in world affairs "has been muted" under President Barack Obama, creating a chaotic and dangerous security environment.,

Rice, who speaks Wednesday night to the Republican National Convention, sought to tout Mitt Romney's foreign policy credentials.

She tells "CBS This Morning" Romney "would understand American exceptionalism and would not be afraid to lead from the front." Rice says the election is about "the future of American leadership" in the world. She says U.S. policy on Syria has been ineffective. Asked what she thinks President Barack Obama has done wrong, the former Bush administration official says Washington has been losing influence around the world because Obama has repeatedly demanded that Syria's Bashar Assad step aside and nothing has happened.

The public school parent's guide to learning at home | Simple Mom

Thanks for visiting Simple Mom. If you subscribe to the blog via RSS feed or via email, you'll get helpful tips and encouragement for simplifying life at home sent straight to you, for free!

Written by contributor Megan Tietz of SortaCrunchy.

Earlier this month, our family reached a new milestone: both of our daughters are now in public school ? all day, every day.

This has been a bittersweet transition for us, but it has been made easier by the fact that both of my children genuinely love school and are endlessly enthusiastic about learning. As a former public school teacher, I know that raising children who love to learn doesn?t happen by accident.

It is an unfortunate stereotype of the public school parent that we have chosen this approach to schooling by default or because we are lazy and want to leave the education of our children to the paid professionals. The reasons for a child to be in public schools are as diverse as a public school classroom itself, and most public school parents I know want to support our children?s learning in any way we can.

Many families do all that we can to foster and nurture learning in the earliest years of a child?s life, as well we should. But when our children begin spending their days in the classroom, we aren?t off the hook! Continuing to build a home where learning is nurtured and valued is one of the best ways we can equip our children for life after graduation.

5 ways to support learning at home

1) Read, read, read

Creating a home with an atmosphere of literacy is the single most important step for supporting learning at all ages and stages of life. This is not just the bias of a language arts teacher showing through ? study after study confirms that homes that create a culture devoted to literacy are the homes from which the most academically successful students come forth.

If your family?s schedule is too full to incorporate the other ideas on this list, then I would encourage you, above anything else, to make time for reading. Reading a book is the springboard for all kinds of enrichment possibilities: math, science, social studies, art. Rather than viewing reading to your child as the act of getting from the front cover to the last, instead consider the treasures hidden in those pages that might excite your child to want to learn more.

?2) Explore educational approaches

Recently, I shared some insights into my family?s decision to choose public school on my own blog, and I absolutely loved what Erin Goodman of exhale. return to center wrote in the comments:

We too are a public school family. (Though I often describe us as Waldorf-inspired life learners who supplement with public school.)

The realm of homeschooling overflows with educational approaches. Just ask anyone who has recently begun homeschooling, and they?ll confirm that there is a dizzying array of philosophies and curricula from which to choose.

So why should homeschooling families have all the fun? Like Erin, I?ve always been drawn to a Waldorf-inspired approach to life. Even if my children don?t learn at home full-time, we can still choose the aspects of that particular educational approach as a filter through which we emphasis learning.

If you?ve never done so before, take some time to explore different approaches to education. (The Methods and Philosophies page at Simple Homeschool is a great place to begin researching!) Anyone involved with public schools would agree that one of the biggest drawbacks to the public school classroom is that no one teacher can teach to the specific learning style of each student in class. The beauty of a learning-rich home is that parents can supplement their child?s learning in a way that meets their specific educational needs!

3) Provide balance to and supplement for classroom curriculum

Whether your child is in early elementary or nearing the end of high school years, you can and should be familiar with what your child is learning in the classroom. And most any teacher would confide that there simply isn?t enough time in the school day to do justice to the learning material.

Ask your child what he would have liked to have? known more about and explore those topics together! A chapter on the formation of mountains might inspire a trip to a natural science museum. A particularly fascinating work of literature might encourage a little digging to discover what popular culture was like at the time that piece was written. A unit on the color red could initiate a neighborhood scavenger hunt for all things red.

Listening and responding to a child?s interests helps further instill the idea that learning is fun and is never, ever limited to a classroom.

4) Collect home learning materials

Home learning materials sounds pretty formal, but really, it?s not! Homes where learning is emphasized contain tools that encourage education.

Build a home library. Invest in a diverse music collection. Display prints of famous artworks next to framed pieces of your child?s own art. Play board games that encourage critical thinking. Fill blank spaces with bon mots ? good words and clever thoughts that make everyone in the family stop and think.

The number of ways to fill your home with the stuff of learning is limited only by your imagination, and you will never be disappointed by the returns on these investments!

5) Celebrate learning for the sake of learning

As you might guess, I feel pretty passionately about homes where learning is encouraged and celebrated. I know first-hand the temptation in thinking that school is where my children learn and home is where we play. The truth is, a playful approach to learning all the time is one of the very best ways we can equip our children for lifelong success.

Truly, the best way we can instill in our children the importance of learning for the sake of learning is to be life-long learners ourselves. As you go about your days spent with children at home, model for them the joy and fulfillment that comes from learning new things all the time.

These are the treasures they will take with them long after tassels are turned on mortarboards and graduation gowns are hung neatly in the closet. And more than anything they will learn from a textbook, these are the lessons they will draw from when the day comes for them to start growing families of their own.

What schooling choices have you made for your children, and how do you create an environment for learning at home?

The effects of discrimination could last a lifetime

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Increased levels of depression as a result of discrimination could contribute to low birth weight babies.

Given the well-documented relationship between low birth weight and the increased risk of health problems throughout one?s lifespan, it is vital to reduce any potential contributors to low birth weight.? A new study by Valerie Earnshaw and her colleagues from Yale University sheds light on one possible causal factor.? Their findings, published online in Springer's journal, the Annals of Behavioral Medicine, suggest that chronic, everyday instances of discrimination against pregnant, urban women of color may play a significant role in contributing to low birth weight babies.

Twice as many black women give birth to low birth weight babies than white or Latina women in the U.S.? Reasons for this disparity are, as yet, unclear. But initial evidence suggests a link may exist between discrimination experienced while pregnant and the incidence of low birth weight.? In addition, experiences of discrimination have also been linked to depression, which causes physiological changes that can have a negative effect on a pregnancy.

Earnshaw and her colleagues interviewed 420, 14- to 21-year-old black and Latina women at 14 community health centers and hospitals in New York, during the second and third trimesters of their pregnancies, and at six and 12 months after their babies had been born.? They measured their reported experiences of discrimination.? They also measured their depressive symptoms, pregnancy distress and pregnancy symptoms.

Levels of everyday discrimination reported were generally low.? However, the impact of discrimination was the same in all the participants regardless of age, ethnicity or type of discrimination reported.? Women reporting greater levels of discrimination were more prone to depressive symptoms, and ultimately went on to have babies with lower birth weights than those reporting lower levels of discrimination.? This has implications for healthcare providers who work with pregnant teens and young women during the pre-natal period, while they have the opportunity to try and reduce the potential impacts discrimination on the pregnancy.

The authors conclude that "Given the associations between birth weight and health across the life span, it is critical to reduce discrimination directed at urban youth of color so that all children are able to begin life with greater promise for health.? In doing so, we have the possibility to eliminate disparities not only in birth weight, but in health outcomes across the lifespan."

Data for this study came from the Centering Pregnancy Plus project, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, and conducted in collaboration with Clinical Directors? Network and the Centering Healthcare Institute.

Peregrine CEO's new wife seeks annulment

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The new wife of Peregrine Financial Group CEO Russell R. Wasendorf Sr. has sought an annulment of their marriage, claiming that he married her knowing he was about to be arrested for defrauding customers and was planning a suicide.

Nancy J. Paladino alleged that Wasendorf married her under false pretenses when they wed on June 30 at the ritzy Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas because he "did not advise of the fraud or the suicide," according to documents filed with Clark County District Court in Nevada.

Paladino, 48, filed her complaint for an annulment on August 13, a month after Wasendorf, 64, was arrested by federal investigators. He was arrested after being released from an Iowa City, Iowa, hospital, where he had recovered from a failed suicide.

Earlier this month, Wasendorf was indicted by a federal grand jury on 31 counts of overstating the amount of customer funds at his brokerage by tens of millions of dollars in faked monthly and yearly reports to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

The CFTC has said Wasendorf misappropriated more than $200 million in customer funds. In a suicide note, Wasendorf confessed to bilking his customers out of millions of dollars over a nearly 20-year period. He is currently being held under suicide watch at the Linn County Jail in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Paladino did not reply to an email request for comment, and her attorney declined to comment on Monday. A spokeswoman for Wasendorf's public defender, Jane Kelly, said the office declined to comment on the annulment filing.

The wedding between Paladino, a former California real estate agent, and Wasendorf was one in a series of events leading up to the scandal-ridden CEO's attempted suicide last month.

The news of the Las Vegas wedding came as a surprise to friends and family in the days after his suicide attempt. Most people had no idea that it happened -- just weeks before a planned church wedding in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he lived and Peregrine Financial Group's headquarters was based.

Paladino, in court documents, said she is seeking to have a judge declare the marriage null and void because Wasendorf obtained her consent to marry him under fraudulent means.

"At the time of the marriage, Defendant knew he was about to be caught and arrested for fraudulent activity, and had planned suicide to avoid the consequences," according to the filing.

The filing states that Paladino is not seeking spousal support from Wasendorf. It also states that she is unemployed and has no monthly income.

Michael Eidelman, the bankruptcy court-appointed receiver for Wasendorf, said he is negotiating with Paladino's attorney over assets in bank accounts that have both her and Wasendorf's name on them.

If convicted on all charges, Wasendorf faces up to 155 years in jail, a $7.75 million fine, and 93 years of supervised release following any imprisonment, according to prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar gets premature outing at Best Buy

Samsung Galaxy Stellar gets premature outing at Best Buy

Verizon just isn't having much success preserving its secrets these days. What hope the carrier had left of keeping the Samsung Galaxy Stellar under wraps has just been been dashed by a full product page at Best Buy. Like we suspected, that astronomical name is attached to the conspicuously grounded Jasper: as long as the listing is accurate, we're looking at a 1.2GHz dual-core processor (toned down from the 1.5GHz rumor), a 4-inch, 800 x 480 display, a so-so 3.2-megapixel back camera and a 1.3-megapixel shooter at the front. We aren't seeing the leaked mentions of Amazon apps or a Starter mode, but there is hope that the Galaxy Stellar might undercut the still fairly stiff $100 price from the earlier Verizon-sourced scoop -- while it's not guaranteed to remain, the $450 contract-free price at Best Buy is about $50 less than we saw before. All that Verizon needs to do now is dispense with formalities and commit to a launch; meanwhile, you can catch a snap of the listing after the break and click the source to see the page for yourself, while it lasts.

New Skin Cancer Treatment Available in Yuma - | News for Yuma ...

YUMA, AZ - A year ago, Jo Bash,? from?Yuma was diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma, a non-melanoma type of skin cancer. She tells News 13 "When I was first diagnosed with skin cancer and told I needed radiation I was scared."

Jo's cancer is among the most common types of skin cancer according to medical experts and for her it was right at the corner of her right eye. She says, "My biggest fear was having the radiation burn me and losing my eyesight."Fortunately for Jo a non-invasive radiation treatment was offered to her at Yuma Oncology Center using a very focused short distance therapy called Xoft.

Board Certified Radiation Oncologist Dr. Gordon Grado is a local physician at Yuma Oncology Center and says this treatment gives the patient a high dose of radiation in small compact and tight locations of the body. He also says it's less disfiguring and damaging to other areas surrounding the cancer. Dr. Grado says "Particularly around the corner of the nose. If you do surgery in that area it can sometimes cause a deviation or bending of the nose to the side. With Xoft we can treat it very nicely and easily."

Dr. Grado says in as little as 8 to 10 treatments each lasting between 5 and 10 minutes the innovative therapy is performed. Dr. Grado says this type of short distance therapy isn't for everyone but for those patients who do undergo the treatment there is a high success rate.

He says this type of treatment is about 98% successful in stopping cancer and the therapy is particularly for those with non-melanoma type of skin cancer, like Jo.

Jo tells News 13, "People says no pain no gain but in this case it's not true. There was no pain, no burning, no nothing, just a beep."

Official: Former Gov. Crist To Speak At DNC ? CBS Charlotte

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama gave Charlie Crist a hug. Mitt Romney gave him $1 million. Apparently the hug meant more to Crist.

The former Republican governor confirmed Monday that he will be speaking at the Democratic National Convention next week in Charlotte, N.C. It?s news that comes as Republicans hold their convention to nominate Romney as their presidential candidate ? an event being held across Tampa Bay from Crist?s St. Petersburg home.

?I think so much of what the president has done and the good he?s tried to do for Florida,? Crist said.

He cited the efforts to help the Gulf Coast states after the BP oil spill and money that the president tried to steer to Florida for a bullet train, which Gov. Rick Scott rejected.

?On issue after issue after issue, he?s proven himself as the kind of person who?s willing to work across the aisle for the betterment of the people.?

Crist left the party in 2010 after declaring he would run for the U.S. Senate as an independent. He was chased from the Republican primary after falling behind eventual winner Marco Rubio in the polls. Rubio overcame a disadvantage in money and support with a message that Crist was not a true conservative ? a strategy that was punctuated with a photo of Crist embracing Obama at a 2009 rally to push for the $787 billion federal stimulus package.

In 2006, Romney, then the Massachusetts governor, gave Crist a $1 million check from the Republican Governors Association to help Crist?s gubernatorial campaign.

Crist on Sunday endorsed Obama.

At a Republican Party of Florida breakfast for convention delegates in Palm Harbor on Monday, incoming House Speaker Will Weatherford mocked Crist. He mentioned Tropical Storm Isaac, then said, ?Speaking of winds blowing and people shifting positions, the Florida Republican Party had a former member of the Republican Party by the name of Charlie Crist.?

The delegates booed.

?I knew that hugs could be powerful, but I really just had no idea until yesterday,? Weatherford said.

Also at the breakfast, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam criticized Crist for thinking of his own political career first.

?He?ll wear any costume just to get in the parade,? Putnam said.

Crist said he anticipated the criticism.

?I didn?t expect them to be jumping for joy,? he said. Crist also said he is not thinking about his party registration right now, but is thinking only about what is in the best interest of the country.

Crist is not registered with either party, but there has been widespread speculation that he will try to make a political comeback as a Democrat and possibly challenge his Republican successor, Scott. That speculation has increased as his wife, Carole, changed her voter registration from Republican to Democrat and after he said he would support Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson?s re-election campaign over Rep. Connie Mack IV. Now, there?s the Obama endorsement and a speaking role at the nominating convention.

Crist has criticized his former party for going too far to the right. As a governor, he was known for being a populist who would welcome Democrats in his office as much as Republicans. He also angered Republicans by vetoing high-priority GOP bills on education and abortion restrictions.

If you are trying to start or join the best home-based-business, or make supplemental income online, then I might have good possibilities for you to take into account beginning or joining an online home-based-business. In this article, I will briefly address Internet Income University, Chris Farrell Membership program, Unstoppable Affiliate program, Cashcrate, SendEarnings, and ProjectPayday. In the Internet Income University business, the co-founder, Kevin Blue, will walk you through the whole course on starting out on this business, called the F.A.S.T. Income Approach. Allow me to describe what the F.A.S.T. Revenue Plan is about. In step one, [F]ast website startup, your own PROFESSIONAL-LIKE website is got by you installed at NO COST! The ONLY REAL things you?ve to pay for is hosting your site with a hosting service (you?ve to select Secure Online Hosting as your web hosting service for this to function), for a low priced monthly fee, and for an annual hosting fee (less than $10.00, but for the very first year of hosting, it is free, thanks to Kevin?s discount code). In the next phase, [A]ffiliate income stream, you get your internet site startup to generate cash from integrated income streams (programs you opted, that have the option of referring visitors to the program for economic gain for each refferal). You?re presented a listing of recommended income streams to enhance your website, but besides the Internet Income University income stream, the income streams are optional. At this time, the rest of the F.A.S.T. Revenue Plan becomes optional. You can now begin selling your website using social internet sites, writing articles centered on your website, and blogging, but to obtain additional support, continue steadily to the third step. In the third step, [S]calable marketing, Kevin?s staff of cause generators with help get your website positioned quicker in the se, using the IIU SEO INFINITY program, for a monthly fee (the cost is clear due to the level of work that goes into promoting your website, but when you can afford it, then get for it). In the next and final step, [T]raining and assistance, you may get support from other effective or knowledgeable IIU (Internet Income University) people from the IIU community (it?s absolve to sign up). That?s it for the F.A.S.T. Income Plan, but that?s not all you can do at IIU; you can view free training videos on marketing your site. In my opinion, this really is among the best home-based-business you could join since you get a free PROFESSIONAL-like created website (at the expense of paying monthly costs), that the only process you must focus on doing is promoting your website, while everything else just about cared for, and as a reward, you?ve the choice of using the IIU SEO INFINITY program to greatly help gain results in your website on auto-pilot.In the Chris Farrell Membership program, guests will get information on starting a home-based-business on a step-by-step plan. On the website, there are certainly a LARGE amount of information about starting your Web business and making online income, including promotional methods for your website. As a reward for looking into the website, the website ?s creator, Chris, offers a free 26-course movie to guests who are seriously interested in building a constant income online. The 26-video course covers a step-by-step method of getting the Internet Business up and operating in a matter of hours. Remember, this system is among the most fundamental ideas of creating money on the web, but your success in a Web business is dependent upon your efforts and determination. Joe himself can tell you how simple it is to get going. In my opinion, presenting free videos about establishing a web business WITHOUT becoming a member is a superb value to prospective customers, BUT to entry ALL information and the huge benefits joining the Chris Farrell Membership program, you must become a full-time member. In the Unstoppable Affiliate program, Andrew, the program?s founder, will address topics which range from exploring worthwhile markets (products) to marketing them on your site. This system will even give you a detailed video program on how exactly to optimize your site based on your market to increase your earnings. If you desire to just focus on affiliate marketing (marketing marketers from others for gains), then this product might be for you to take into account joining. Now, I?ll give my brief reviews on Internet applications on which you could make supplemental income online.SendEarnings: On the SendEarnings website, you?ve several ways of earning simple cash on their website. You?ll get paid to take surveys, complete business presents, play entertaining activities, complete simple tasks (ex: addressing a couple of questions about a site, exploring up a certain period, etc.), redeem your market deals presented on SendEarnings, and for referring your pals or clients for this system. You?ll also be able to get money straight back from well-known online retailers. As a bonus for enrolling, you?ll get credited $5.00 to your SendEarnings account.CashCrate: This program is really a little just like the SendEarnings program with less options to select from, but more money can be earned by you performing studies and offers than SendEarnings, though. Unlike SendEarnings, CashCreate is strong on the referral system, meaning for each account amount you accomplish, your payment per referral increases by a percentage.ProjectPayday( For US citizens only ): Once you get your account setup and triggered, you can then decide to try the ?Fast-First Fifty? manual with Kelly to get started immediately. In addition, you get PAID $50 only for finishing the Fast-First Fifty manual! Only make sure to follow the directions WATCHFULLY and then you can get settled, it?s that easy. Basically, the most common way to earn money would be to ?go green? both by checking out company products and services, or by dealing ?greens? with other ProjectPayday( PP) customers in forums. This is a great way to earn more income on line (enough to fund charges, everyday common goods, etc). As far as PP?s referral plan goes, you earn a fee of $1.00 ($2.00 if you?re a VIP member) for every single referral that induce a merchant account from your own PP referral link. This is pretty much most of my evaluations on home-based-business or creating extra cash online, but I really hope to update my evaluation list in the foreseeable future, though. I discussed in my article above, simply click the web link to my web site below on some of the applications if you want additional information. Please help my website by signing up for the applications on my website. Thank you for taking your own time to learn my article!
