Domotex Middle East receives major boost from Turkey's ... - AME Info

Turkey's buoyant economy no doubt has a part to play in prompting registrations from key players in the global floor coverings market, including Peli Parquet, Tu?ra Hal?, Neuhofer Holz and M. A. Trading.

From 7 to 10 November 2013, Domotex Middle East will be showcasing a vast range of carpets and floor coverings from around the world at the Istanbul Expo Center.

"With a projected economic development of nearly 4% next year, Turkey remains on a growth course and reasserts its position as one of the world's 20 most dynamic places to do business," explained Martin Folkerts, Director Global Fairs at Deutsche Messe in Hannover. "Istanbul is easy to reach for Turkish buyers as well as business people from the Middle East. Domotex Middle East offers the best business chances to domestic and foreign companies and we are pleased with the industry's vibrant interest."

Turkish construction sector back on growth trajectory

The period of consolidation which followed the 2010 and 2011 boom years in Turkey's construction sector has ended, with the local industry now bracing for a new growth spurt. The Turkish government's plans to foster environmentally-friendly and energy efficient building solutions have sparked fresh interest from construction companies and finance providers, including from Germany. According to the "European Real Estate Assets Investment Trend 2013" report by consulting firm Ernst & Young, Turkey ranks among Europe's most attractive markets for real estate investment. The Turkish Association of Real Estate Investment Companies (GYODER) is expecting Turkey's construction sector to grow by around 5% in 2013. Underpinning this growth is the country's strong demand for apartments, which is outstripping the rest of Europe by a significant margin and which will benefit both local companies and international suppliers.

The Turkish government's plans for an "Urban Transformation Program" will provide an added boost to the local construction industry. The program calls for $400bn-worth of investment into private apartments and numerous large housing complexes over the next 20 years. Apart from meeting residential housing demand, its objectives are to lift building safety standards in Turkey's cities and reduce the potential damage caused by natural disasters, such as earthquakes.

The Turkish government also plans to increase the capacity of its domestic hotel industry, especially the number of hotel newbuilds by international luxury hotel chains. Other major construction measures in the planning pipeline include a third international airport, a finance center, the Istanbul Seaport project and the expansion and upgrade of the country's network of hospitals.

Product portfolio and visitor profile

The product portfolio on show at this year's Domotex Middle East will reflect the sheer scale and specific needs of Turkey's burgeoning construction sector. It will comprise hand- and machine-made carpets, hallway runners and mats, textile and resilient floor coverings, laminates and timber and parquet flooring. It will also feature state-of-the art textile production machinery and materials, such as fibers and yarns; artificial grass and sports surfaces; laying, cleaning and application technologies; and natural stone, marble and ceramic tiles. Domotex Middle East is the only trade fair in Turkey to feature such a comprehensive offering of floor coverings and associated products and technologies.

Domotex Middle East is frequented exclusively by industry professionals, such as floor covering wholesalers and retailers, exporters, importers, architects, interior designers, industrial and product designers, real estate developers and floor layers. The fair also attracts purchasing executives and senior managers from public authorities, hospitals, educational institutions, sports centers, manufacturing companies, construction firms, hotels, shopping and business centers and the ship and yacht building industry.

Aresco: American expects inclusion at top level

(AP) ? American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco says any restructuring of major college football should have his re-invented league included at the top level.

Aresco opened the first football media day for the conference formerly known as the Big East by touting its accomplishments and making the case that his league is not so dissimilar to the big five.

The commissioners of the five most powerful conferences have been pushing the NCAA to reform its rules and policies. They have even suggested it could lead to the creation of a new level of college sports.

Aresco says: "Whatever the highest level of Division I is in the future, we expect to be part of it."

Terminally Ill bride given dream wedding

By NBCBayArea.com

At first, when 35-year-old Jen Bulik developed a cough that she couldn't shake, doctors diagnosed it as pneumonia. But when it still didn't go away with treatment, further tests showed the fateful diagnosis: Stage IV lung cancer.

Last month, after five months of treatment, Bulik received the dreaded news from her doctors: Even with continued treatment, she had less than six months to live.

"So when I heard that, I said, 'Let's get married,'" said Bulik, who had been dating longtime boyfriend Jeff Lang for six years. "Because I wanted to focus on life."

With time running out, Bulik and Lang chose to plan a simple, small wedding with close friends and family--barbecue food served on paper plates in Jen's parents' back yard.

Instead, thanks to the help of strangers, Bulik got the wedding of her dreams. Thirty Bay Area wedding vendors donated $50,000 worth of goods and services to make Bulik's wedding dreams come true.

NBC?Bay Area's Garvin Thomas, who reported on this touching story, attended the wedding Saturday.

The ceremony was just as the couple imagined--outside, under sunny skies, with lots of live music, smiling faces, and a giant cheer as the groom kissed the bride

More on NBCBayArea.com

Afterward, the couple said the term dream wedding was no understatement.

"For me, this whole process has been really difficult and today was easy," Bulik said. "We just showed up and did our thing, and it just gets more and more magical with every moment."

As for the barbecue reception, what were once pictures on a Pinterest board and hand-drawn maps sprung to life in Bulik's parents' backyard.

Wedding planner Erica Ota was on hand with a walkie talkie, making sure everything went off without a hitch.

The newlyweds say they hope their pictures can someday provide inspiration for the next couple planning their dream wedding.

Donations to Bulik and her family for a post-wedding vacation and to cover her increasing medical expenses can be made at: this link. At last check nearly 500 people had donated more than $28,000. ?

3 dead when bus carrying teens crashes in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A bus carrying teenagers returning to Indiana from a church camp in Michigan crashed Saturday afternoon just minutes from home, killing three people and sending 26 others to hospitals, officials said.

The bus came speeding off of Interstate 465 in northern Indianapolis, about a mile from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church that passengers attended, struck a retaining wall as it rounded a curve and overturned. The campers were returning from Camp CoBeAc in northern Michigan, about six hours away.

The church's youth pastor had sent a tweet a couple of hours before the crash saying the group was expected to arrive at the church about 4:15 p.m., around the time the accident happened.

"They were not that far from home. That only adds to the tragedy," said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs.

The dead included a man and his wife, Riggs said. Authorities did not provide information about the third victim.

Riggs and Mayor Greg Ballard visited the crash scene, where clothing, pillows and seat cushions from the bus were scattered along with at least two shattered windows, before they headed to the church. Riggs said there was no indication that the driver had a medical emergency and called the accident "a great tragedy."

Ballard said investigators were taking measurements and examining the bus to determine the cause of the crash.

WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed. Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said police and fire officials had not determined whether the church-owned bus, which was carrying 37 passengers plus the driver, had mechanical issues.

Duane Lloyd told WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m.

"I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus," Lloyd said. "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

Karen Woodard, a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, cried as she stared at the wrecked bus.

"It's so terrible. I can't believe it," she said.

Indianapolis Fire Department said crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Several people stopped to help before first responders could arrive, including one man who helped pull the driver out of the bus, the department said.

"People were stopping their cars. People were literally trying to lift the bus," Lloyd said. "You just try to do what you can do."

Fire officials said the injured included children and adults.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Three of those were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter said. She said 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released, Winter said.

Many of the patients were suffering head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities urged people to use caution in the area. A hazardous materials crew was cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled in the crash.

Outside the church, a yellow school bus with the church school's name was parked outside with piles of sleeping bags and suitcases nearby. Families hugged outside and talked quietly before going inside, where they met with Ballard and Riggs Saturday evening.

Ballard described the families as "remarkably positive" despite their sorrow.

"Some of the teenagers are hurting pretty bad and you can see that in their faces," he said.

Church member Jeff Leffew, 44, of Fishers, who had three daughters on the bus that crashed and a fourth on a second bus, said he was waiting to pick them up in the church parking lot when the second bus arrived. He said he knew immediately that something was wrong because the kids on the bus were screaming.

He went to the crash scene and found his three daughters with only bumps and bruises.

He called the crash scene "surreal."

"You're just praying that it's not as bad as it looks," he said.

Will baby Prince George ever become king of Canada?

For republicans and monarchists alike, Prince George looks to have brought about general agreement on one issue at least: His very birth is a positive sign for the future of the monarchy.

John Fraser, the master at Toronto's Massey College and author of The Secret of the Crown: Canada's Affair with Royalty, says that even he feels sorry for republicans following the royal birth on July 22.

One of Fraser's favourite republican sparring partners, the eminent historian Michael Bliss, concedes the royals are "on a good run now" ? a view that seems to be ricocheting around the globe.

British journalist Claudia Joseph, author of Kate: the Making of a Princess, told Associated Press, "I think this baby is hugely significant for the future of the monarchy," at least partly because George is the first offspring of a "commoner" in 350 years to be an heir to the throne.

Meanwhile, the editors of the New Zealand Herald opined that countries like New Zealand now "may be less anxious to cast off a connection of heritage that presents no threat to their constitutional sovereignty."

And the Australian Times reports that the royal birth "could prove to be the change that was needed for Australia to renew its commitment to the Commonwealth."

Author and journalist John Fraser defends the Crown in this 2012 book. But part of its dedication is to 'Michael Bliss: Historian, Conservative, Republican.'Author and journalist John Fraser defends the Crown in this 2012 book. But part of its dedication is to 'Michael Bliss: Historian, Conservative, Republican.' (CBC)

Not everyone was overwhelmed, mind you. In Northern Ireland, after brooding over "an heir backlog within the House of Windsor," the Belfast Telegraph observed that "it is hard even to envisage the future for a royal child born in the age of Twitter."

And Andrew Vine, an assistant editor at the Yorkshire Post, took the BBC to task for what he calls its "nasty little caveat" -- by repeatedly using the phrase "as things stand" in stories about George that implies "doubt hangs over the future of the monarchy."

"It is impossible to avoid the conclusion that within the BBC lies a mentality that regards the monarchy as a tiresome and outdated anachronism, and by extension, the millions who rejoiced at news of the birth as little more than deluded peasants in thrall to the pomp, pageantry and spectacle of royal events, an easily-pleased rabble who turn ga-ga with starry-eyed adoration and abandon all critical faculty when the glass coach passes by," Vine writes.

What does history tell us about the monarchy?s future?

Last year Fraser and Bliss were debating the monarchy before large audiences across Canada. So after the new prince's name was revealed, CBC News checked in with the two eminent Canadians for their thoughts on the future of the Crown in Canada.

Bliss, ever the historian, looks to what recent world history tells us about about forms of government and counts fewer monarchies. "You don't have many countries that adopt a monarchy and you have various countries that get rid of it, so the historical trend is against the poor baby," he said.

He also pointed out the decline of the monarchy among Commonwealth nations over the last half-century. Only 16 of the 53 members nations recognize the Queen as their head of state.

"I would bet my money the baby will never be the king of Australia and New Zealand, and my guess is not of Canada either," Bliss said.

John Fraser says the test for the Royal Family is not the good times but how they weather 'the crises, and so far they look pretty resilient.'John Fraser says the test for the Royal Family is not the good times but how they weather 'the crises, and so far they look pretty resilient.' (Massey College)

When it comes to monarchy, much depends on public opinion, both he and Fraser agree. "The polls do show that with every generation of Canadians, there's less interest in the monarchy," says Bliss and he expects that trend to continue.

Fraser's view: "Any institution that depends on the goodwill of the masses has clouds over it, they're built in."

But he also noted that the same applies to parliamentary democracy or the American republican system.

Testing constitutional monarchy

"The test is not the good times, these nice times of renewal for the constitutional monarchy. But how it weathers the crises and so far they look pretty resilient," Fraser said about the the Royal family.

"They've been counted down so many times," he added. But "if you project from today, things are looking good."

Fraser argues that, in Canada, the monarchy "probably will continue, because to open up any kind of constitutional issue in Canada is always so fraught, and it had better be for a pretty important reason, and I don't think the constitutional monarchy actually constitutes a very important reason to hurl each other at each other."

Bliss concedes "there's a certain amount of truth in that, and that's the inertia factor, which is probably [Prince George's] best hope.

In 2008, with the opposition parties planning to bring down his government, Prime Minister Stephen Harper succeeded in getting then governor general Michaelle Jean to approve his controversial recommendation to prorogue Parliament. In 2008, with the opposition parties planning to bring down his government, Prime Minister Stephen Harper succeeded in getting then governor general Michaelle Jean to approve his controversial recommendation to prorogue Parliament. (Fred Chartrand/Canadian Press)

"The problem with that is that as we've seen at least once, maybe more often in recent history, the status quo can get us into some serious problems."

As Bliss sees it, "there is a serious flaw in the Constitution related to the monarchy, and the flaw is that the monarchy is so completely ceremonial and toothless that it is nothing more than a creature of the government of the day."

Abuse of prime ministerial power

That toothlessness results in the Governor General having no legitimacy to be a serious check on prime ministerial power, Bliss said.

It is a serious problem that "crops up whenever a prime minister appears to be abusing power, as in proroguing Parliament. In the next 65 years it's hard to think that Canada will sail along quietly, constitutionally."

This week the Quebec government said it would be an intervener in support of a court challenge to the legislation passed unanimously by the House of Commons in March that removed the gender bias in the rules on royal succession.

Since Henry VIII (in portrait), British monarchs have had the title, 'Defender of the Faith.' Prince Charles, shown here in 2004, has proposed dropping the 'the.' Since Henry VIII (in portrait), British monarchs have had the title, 'Defender of the Faith.' Prince Charles, shown here in 2004, has proposed dropping the 'the.' (Fiona Hanson/Reuters)

The challenge is mostly about the way the changes were implemented. The Quebec law professors bringing the case argue Canada's Constitution requires the consultation and agreement of all the provinces for a change of this magnitude to become law.

The federal government disagrees, arguing that a change to the rules of succession is not a constitutional amendment to the role of the monarchy. But Bliss says that this case could be "a real sleeping stick of dynamite."

Only Anglicans need apply

Another argument in the court challenge is that the change discriminates on the basis of religion because it requires the heir to be Anglican.

Fraser points out that, in Britain, there is the real possibility of the disestablishment of the Church of England as the state church. "The moment that happens, the denomination of the sovereign is irrelevant," he argues.

In 1521, Pope Leo X bestowed on Henry VIII the title "Defender of the Faith," and every monarch since then has taken on that title at their coronation. Prince Charles has argued for a slight but important change in the title ? dropping the word "the."

And while the suggestion provoked a firestorm, Fraser argues that Charles's view is important for the survival of the monarchy. "The monarchy has to be inclusive, not exclusive, that's his instinct and that's being passed on to his heir."

Historian Michael Bliss says we are entering the age of the geriatric monarchy, with the prospect of only elderly men succeeding each other once Charles becomes king.Historian Michael Bliss says we are entering the age of the geriatric monarchy, with the prospect of only elderly men succeeding each other once Charles becomes king. (CBC)

Fraser and Bliss both agree that Catherine has boosted the monarchy's popularity at the moment, essentially because shecomes across as a lovely young woman with an easygoing nature.

But Bliss points out that we are also in what he calls the age of the geriatric monarchy.

As things stand, to invoke the BBC caveat, after Queen Elizabeth the crown passes to her already 64-year-old son, Charles.

Given the longevity of the Windsors, and their opposition to abdication, the future of this royal family looks to be one of elderly men succeeding each other for at least three generations.

For Bliss, the likelihood there may not be another young queen like Elizabeth poses a problem for the monarchy's future image.

Halliburton spill probe resolved. Will BP contractor cut another deal?

Halliburton has agreed to pay a fine for its role?in the 2010 Gulf oil spill, thereby resolving?a U.S. Justice Department criminal probe. Still, Halliburton, the cement contractor involved in the spill,?has a powerful incentive to cut another deal with businesses and residents.

Halliburton?has resolved a U.S. Justice Department criminal probe of its role in the 2010 Gulf oil spill by agreeing to pay a $200,000 fine and admitting it destroyed evidence, but the company still has a powerful incentive to cut another deal with businesses and residents.

The plea agreement doesn't shield?Halliburton?from a high-stakes decision by a federal judge, who is considering how much the companies involved in the well blowout should pay for damage from the nation's worst offshore oil spill. How much each pays would be determined by how much fault the judge assigns them for the disaster that killed 11 workers and led to millions of gallons of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas-based?Halliburton, which was British oil giant BP's cement contractor on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded, can take its chances on getting a favorable ruling by a U.S. judge. Or it can eliminate much of the risk and potential liability by settling with a team of attorneys for tens of thousands of Gulf Coast businesses and residents who claim the spill cost them money.

The guilty plea could apply more pressure on?Halliburton?to get a deal done before the judge rules.?

An arraignment for?Halliburton?is scheduled for Wednesday. It's unclear when the company will plead guilty.

In a regulatory filing Friday,?Halliburton?said it is participating in court-facilitated settlement discussions to resolve a "substantial portion" of the private claims pending before the judge. But the pace of those talks has recently slowed while BP challenges a portion of its own multibillion-dollar settlement with the team of plaintiffs' lawyers, the filing says.

Halliburton?won't face any other criminal charges in connection with the case, though individual employees could still be charged. The Justice Department agreed not to prosecute the company for any other conduct related to the blowout.

When BP reached its own criminal settlement with the Justice Department, it agreed to pay a record $4 billion and plead guilty to manslaughter charges for the deaths of the rig workers. Rig owner Transocean Ltd., meanwhile, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge and agreed to pay $400 million in criminal penalties.

Fadel Gheit, an Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. senior analyst who covers the oil and gas industry, said he was surprised that the criminal settlement didn't cost?Halliburton?far more money.

"I call it a traffic violation," he said. "This is for (a company) that destroyed evidence, for heaven's sake."

The destruction of evidence involved a post-spill review of the cement job on BP's well.

The allegations at the center of criminal case aren't new. In December 2011, BP sought sanctions against?Halliburton?over its handling of cement testing and modeling results.

Sutter/PAMF to open new Sunnyvale clinic and cancer center Aug. 5

The new PAMF primary care clinic and cancer center is set to open Aug. 5.

The Palo Alto Medical Foundation, which includes roughly 1,100 physicians throughout the Peninsula, South Bay and parts of the East Bay, is opening a new 120,000-square-foot primary care clinic and cancer center in Sunnyvale early next month.

The new clinic, at 301 Old San Francisco Road, replaces an earlier 55-year-old structure that was demolished about three years ago, said PAMF spokeswoman Cynthia Greaves.

The new center, set to open Aug. 5, has 170 exam rooms, space for 80 doctors and staff, and 800 onsite parking spaces. Two adjacent clinics, which served patients while the 301 Old San Francisco Road building was being torn down and replaced, "will be closed for renovation, which is as yet unscheduled," PAMF officials said Thursday.

The Sunnyvale Medical Center includes an 80,000-square-foot primary care center with family and internal medicine units and 60 doctors, a 40,000-square-foot cancer care center with 13 chemotherapy infusion stations, an OB/GYN department and a pediatric department, along with a lab, conference center, health resource center and cafe.

Elizabeth Vilardo, M.D., is PAMF's South Bay division president in charge of the clinic and other facilities in the vicinity. The medical foundation, a unit of Sacramento-based Sutter Health, is also building a major outpatient campus in San Carlos, and expanding its presence in nearby Los Gatos.

An open house for the community is scheduled for Sunday, July 28 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Chris Rauber's beats include health care, insurance and the wine industry for the San Francisco Business Times.

TCL's fall lineup of HDTVs includes a 50-inch 4K model for $999

TCL

If you're yearning for a super high res HDTV and the usual suspects' products are just a bit too pricey, there's a new challenger about to join: China's TCL. Its fall lineup of televisions leads with a 50-inch 4K model (shown above) due in September priced at just $999. It joins Seiki as a Chinese manufacturer bringing budget priced Ultra HD panels to the US with this 120Hz edge lit LED model that packs 4 HDMI inputs with MHL support. If the 7E504D's 3,840 x 2,160 resolution screen isn't a must-have for you, it does have some more traditional HDTVs on the way in the form of its 5510 series.

They include 40-, 46- and 55-inch 1080p models, priced at $399, $499 and $799, respectively. The largest one includes built-in WiFi with Smart TV features including Netflix, YouTube and Yahoo Apps, and all go on sale in August. So far, reviews of the Seiki UHDTVs have suggested resolution isn't everything even at these prices (and especially at this screen size) -- we'll be waiting to see if TCL's scaling, contrast, motion processing and other qualities can match up with the big guys.

Matt Smith Nostalgic On 'Late Late Show' Talking About His Final Season On 'Doctor Who' (VIDEO)

Current and outgoing Doctor, Matt Smith, got nostalgic about his iconic role during his visit to "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson." He took on the titular role of The Doctor in "Doctor Who" in 2010 and announced his decision in June to leave the show after the end of the upcoming season.

?One has to move on. You can?t do it forever," Smith said. "I?ll miss it. It?s been quite a journey.?

?But it?s time," Ferguson said. "Maybe do some slasher movies, or maybe some porn??

?Hey listen, you never know," laughed Smith.

Smith told Vulture that there had been a plan in place for him to leave "Doctor Who" for a while now. He thinks his departure from the show will actually help it, keeping it fresh. And he'll still be finding plenty of work. Next up for him is a role in "How to Catch a Monster," the highly-anticipated directorial debut from Ryan Gosling.

Stay up late and laugh with "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," weeknights at 12:37 a.m. ET on CBS.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini returns to the FCC with AT&T-capable LTE

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini revisits the FCC, now with AT&Tfriendly LTE

When the Galaxy S4 Mini reached the FCC last month, we thought that might be the last we'd see of it in the US; the Galaxy S III Mini never officially reached the country, after all. The GS4 Mini is back for another round, however, and it's now toting AT&T-native support for both LTE (on the 700MHz and AWS bands) and HSPA (850MHz and 1,900MHz). Few other surprises are in store, although we've noticed that there's no AWS-based HSPA for T-Mobile fans. The filing also doesn't say anything about an AT&T launch for the GS4 Mini, but it comes a month after the FCC approved a compatible Galaxy Mega 6.3 -- we wouldn't be surprised if there's more to the story.

3 years after mysterious virus infected 2 Missouri Men, causing severe illness, scientists report isolating pathogen in nearby tick population

DEERFIELD, IL. (JULY 22, 2013) Scientists have for the first time traced a novel virus that infected two men from northwestern Missouri in 2009 to populations of ticks in the region, providing confirmation that lone star ticks are carrying the recently discovered virus and humans in the area are likely at risk of infection. The findings were published online today in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Dubbed Heartland virus or HRTV, the infection causes fever, headaches, and low white blood cell and platelet counts. The two men infected in 2009, who live about 70 miles apart, were sufficiently ill to require hospitalization. They eventually recovered, and no other cases have been reported. Disease experts anticipate, however, that more people could become infected. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is working with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify additional cases and determine the role of this novel virus as a human pathogen.

"Ten samples of ticks tested positive for the Heartland virus, nine of which were collected from the property of one of the patients and one that came from conservation lands nearby," said Harry M. Savage, PhD, a research entomologist at CDC in Fort Collins, Colorado and the lead author of the paper. "It's pretty strong evidence that the virus is persisting from season to season in tick populations and that these ticks play an important role in disease transmission."

There is no treatment available for HRTV. Unlike other tick-borne diseases like Lyme, ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, HRTV is a virus and thus does not respond to antibiotics.

Disease Hunting

HRTV was discovered when a doctor at the hospital treating the two infected men, who had reported being bitten by ticks, sent blood samples to a CDC laboratory in Atlanta for testing. All involved assumed the tests would reveal ehrlichiosis, the tick-borne disease that is most common in the area. Instead, the tests revealed a virus that had never been recognized. Subsequent analysis showed that HRTV belongs to a group of viruses known as phleboviruses, which can be carried by sandflies, mosquitoes or ticks. Savage said there is a separate team of researchers conducting tests with animals in the area in an effort to identify the "reservoir hosts" that are carrying the virus and passing it along to ticks.

Since the HRTV discovery, which was reported in August 2012 in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists have been combing the area for the source of the infection. Savage and his team, which included investigators from Missouri Western State University, collected 56,428 ticks from April to August of 2012. They employed a variety of collection methods. Flannel pads used in infant bedding were mounted to bamboo poles to act as a sort of fly-paper for ticks. Plastic food containers were "baited" with dry ice, which emits carbon dioxidea natural attractant for the ticks. Researchers even removed ticks from horses and dogs.

"Finding a virus in ticks requires the collection and testing of large numbers of ticks," Savage said. The virus infection rate in nymph stage ticks from one farm owned by a patient was about one in five hundred over the study period. Humans are likely to become infected when they are bitten by a tick carrying the virus. Savage said one of the HRTV patients recounted pulling dozens of ticks off his body each night before bed.

According to Savage, the ticks that carry the virusknown as lone star ticks for the single white spot found on femalesare common in the area and in many other parts of the country as well. Currently, there are no reports of HRTV in any other tick populations aside from those isolated in northwestern Missouri. He said it's hard to predict where the virus might be located in the US and if the virus will spread.

HRTV appears to be related to another new disease recently discovered in China, a life-threatening virus called severe fever with thrombocytopenia (SFTSV). SFTSV also appears to be tick-borne, though there is evidence of person-to-person transmission as well.

"This research illustrates the ever-changing world we live in and why we must sustain our nation's investment in research into these types of diseases that the majority of Americans will never hear of," said David H. Walker, MD, president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, whose research has included a focus on tick-borne diseases. "It is only by getting trained experts into the field and doing the necessary work of collecting and testing thousands of specimens, as these scientists did, that we can be one step ahead of what could become another serious health threat carried by ticks."

To prevent Heartland virus and other diseases spread by ticks, CDC recommends taking the following steps:

  • Wear repellent
  • Check for ticks daily
  • Shower soon after being outdoors
  • Call your doctor if you get a fever or rash

Netflix profit grows, shares drop on subscriber numbers

By Lisa Richwine

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Video subscription service Netflix Inc signed up fewer-than-expected new customers for its streaming service in the second quarter, sending its shares tumbling by nearly 6 percent on Monday despite a higher-than-expected profit.

Netflix beat analysts' forecasts with $29 million in second-quarter profit and earnings per share of 49 cents, but said it added 630,000 new streaming customers in the United States, in the middle of a forecast the company issued in April.

"The stock was priced for perfection going into the quarter, hence the sell-off," Evercore Partners analyst Alan Gould said. "They didn't beat on the subscriber numbers."

The average expectation of Wall Street analysts was 700,000, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said.

Shares of Netflix fell 5.8 percent in after-hours trading on Monday to $246.78, down from their earlier $261.96 close on the Nasdaq.

Netflix shares have soared 183 percent this year, setting a high bar the company's quarterly results, analysts said.

The May release of comedy "Arrested Development" generated a "small but noticeable bump in membership," Chief Executive Reed Hastings and Chief Financial Officer David Wells said in a letter to shareholders.

The company generated buzz from last week's Emmy nominations for "Arrested Development" and an original series, political thriller "House of Cards," the first Internet series to garner Emmy nods in major categories.

Netflix, in its shareholder letter, forecast it will add up to 1.5 million U.S. streaming customers in the current quarter. That guidance "looks like a little light," Gabelli & Co analyst Brett Harriss said. "Netflix needs to add a substantial amount of subscribers to justify the current valuation."

The company reported 29.8 million U.S. streaming customers at the end of June, and 7.8 million international streaming customers.
