Ways to Reduce the Severity of Whiplash Injuries | Personal Injury ...

By Van Der Walde & Associates on May 30, 2013 -

San Jose Whiplash InjuryWhiplash injuries are injuries to the neck that occur in a wide range of car accidents, although they are most common in rear-end crashes, according to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). They include injuries to soft tissue, muscles, nerves, ligaments, and even the bones of the neck.? Pain, swelling, and stiffness may linger even after the injuries appear to have healed.

While whiplash injuries are not fully understood, researchers have identified several risk factors that can be addressed to reduce the severity of whiplash injuries in an accident. In addition to driving safely to avoid accidents, you can help protect yourself and your passengers from severe whiplash by considering the following factors:

  • Headrest position.? The headrests in your vehicle are designed to help restrain the head during an accident, but they can only work if they are adjusted for the height of the passenger using them. Don?t hesitate to adjust headrests to protect yourself and your passengers.
  • Seating position.?Sitting further away from the dashboard and leaning back into the seat so your head is near the headrest may help to reduce the severity of whiplash injuries, according to some research. Adjust the back of the seat so that it is upright, and sit in a relaxed position in the seat whenever possible. Drivers should, of course, lean forward in order to see blind spots and other areas to drive safely.

At Van Der Walde & Associates, our focused San Jose car accident attorneys are dedicated to helping each of our clients get the compensation they need to deal with whiplash or other injuries. Contact us today at (877) 862-6288 for a free and confidential case evaluation.

How the Navy of the Future Will Find? And Destroy?Underwater Mines

You don't joke about mining important maritime trade routes?Iran did and nearly started WWIII. And while America's fleet of MH-53E Sea Dragons and Avenger-class mine countermeasures ships are still quite effective, they're getting really, really old. Both platforms entered service in the mid-1980s and are quickly nearing their retirement dates. Here's what the Navy has in store for its future countermining operations.

Ted Cruz avoids controversy in NYC speech

Protestors outside the site of Ted Cruz's speech in Manhattan (John Moore/Getty Images)

NEW YORK? Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is a rising star Republican who has irked even members of his own party with his conservative views on immigration reform and gun control.

But Cruz made no mention of those hot-button topics in his official debut on the New York political stage Wednesday, using a speech before the state GOP to encourage Republicans to be optimistic about their party?s future and to continue the fight for ?economic growth? and ?freedom? because the nation?s future depends on it.

?It is very easy for Republicans to feel demoralized right now? but change happens fast, like lightning in politics,? Cruz declared during a 35-minute speech at a packed fundraising dinner for the Republican Party of New York State in Manhattan. But he argued that Republicans could win again by sticking to their ideals.

"I am profoundly optimistic for this country because our ideas work," Cruz said. "Freedom works.?

Cruz?s speech, which was littered with references to Ronald Reagan and generic calls for the party to stick to its economic principles, seemed aimed at being as non-controversial as possible?a notable move given the furor that preceded the senator?s appearance here, which included protests from two high-profile New York Republicans.

On Tuesday, Rep. Peter King announced he was skipping the annual dinner in protest of Cruz?s efforts to derail a bill giving federal aid to victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Asked about King?s boycott before he took the stage, Cruz replied, ?I have not met Mr. King, but I think it is unfortunate he couldn?t join us here tonight.?

But King wasn?t the only holdout. Rep. Michael Grimm, a Republican from Staten Island whose district was hard hit by Sandy, skipped the event?though he insisted he had never planned to attend. His announcement came after Democrats tried to make an issue of the dinner and called on Grimm to ?condemn? his party for inviting Cruz.

State party officials shrugged off the cancellations. One party official, who declined to be named, trashed King, saying the GOP congressman hasn?t attended a state GOP dinner ?since George Pataki was governor.? Meanwhile, Ed Cox, the state GOP chairman, said criticism of Cruz's opposition to the Sandy bill had been misinterpreted. "That was a vote against pork," he said. "It was not against Sandy aid."

Officials also insisted the protests had no impact on ticket sales for the annual dinner. According to NY GOP spokesman David Leska, 500 tickets were sold for the event, raising about $750,000 for the party?about the same that had been raised at dinners held in previous years.

?No impact at all,? Leska said of controversy over Cruz?s policy positions.

Indeed, many Republicans, who showed up early to wine and dine during a cocktail hour ahead of the speech, waved off criticism over Cruz?s appearance. ?Overblown,? one man said, as he took his seat inside a large ballroom at the Grand Hyatt, where the annual dinner was held.

But it was a different story outside, where several dozen people waved signs protesting Cruz?s stance on immigration and Sandy aid. ?Anti-Latino!? one sign, featuring a photo of Cruz, said.

Speaking to reporters, Cruz said he hadn?t seen the protestors, but welcomed their presence. ?It?s important that we have a civil dialogue on the issues that matter to all of us,? Cruz said.

But the senator carefully pushed back against his critics on immigration?though he did so while trying to offer as little specifics as possible. He told reporters he is fighting for a ?common sense? approach to immigration.

?I think the key to actually passing a bill is to focus on areas of bipartisan agreement,? Cruz said. He specifically cited ?securing the border? and efforts to ?expand, improve and streamline legal immigration.? Asked if he planned to filibuster an immigration bill championed by President Barack Obama, he declined to answer, saying only that he planned to introduce amendments to ?improve the bill so that it actually fixes the problem.?

?The current bill is utterly toothless when it comes to border security,? Cruz said.

Asked again if he would filibuster the current Senate bill, Cruz declined to answer, as an aide tried to usher reporters away. ?This is not a press conference!? the aide said, as Cruz turned away from the media.

Introduced as a ?rising star,? Cruz took the stage here to a standing ovation and wild applause from the audience. He bypassed the podium that had been used by speakers ahead of him, and instead wore a wireless microphone as he paced the stage, appearing less like a politician and more like a motivational speaker.

His speech was a boilerplate economic address?hitting on generic themes of ?free market? opportunity and warning about the nation?s growing federal deficit.

?It's morally wrong to bankrupt our country and saddle our children and grandchildren with debt,? Cruz declared at one point.

He won tepid applause for a round of jokes about the Justice Department?jokingly warning attendees that their phones were likely be tapped because they had attended the dinner. But the room went silent as he recounted his own personal story of growing up as the son of a Cuban immigrant who had come to America with nothing but $100 sewn into his underwear and took a job washing dishes for 50 cents an hour while he put himself through school.

?My dad has been my hero my entire life,? Cruz said. ?But what I find most incredible about his story is how commonplace it is. Every one of us in this room has a story just like his? Every one of us is the child of someone who risked everything for freedom. That?s what it means to be American: Love, liberty and opportunity.?

As Cruz continued to speak, a woman seated at a table near the back of the room turned to her husband and mouthed the word, ?Wow.?

KKR names former CIA head Petraeus as chairman of new institute

(Reuters) - Private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co said it appointed former CIA Director David Petraeus as chairman of the newly created KKR Global Institute, which will study the investment implications of global macroeconomic, social and geopolitical issues.

Petraeus will also support KKR's investment teams in the diligence process, particularly in considering investments in new geographies, KKR said on Thursday.

Petraeus was credited with helping pull Iraq from the brink of an all-out civil war as commander there and President Barack Obama turned to him to lead U.S. forces in Afghanistan before moving to him to the CIA in 2011.

Petraeus resigned as head of the CIA in November, saying he had engaged in an extramarital affair.

The sex scandal involving Petraeus and his biographer Paula Broadwell, an Army reserve intelligence officer who is also married, provided fodder for comedians and triggered a media storm that followed his confession and resignation.

It was a stunning downfall for a revered military man who was seen as one of the top American leaders of his generation and was once considered a potential contender for the White House.

KKR, which has more than $78 billion in assets under management, has been involved in some of the biggest private equity buyouts in history including the $45 billion takeover of Texas power producer TXU, now known as Energy Future Holdings, in 2007.

KKR's other investments include hospital operator HCA Holdings Inc , retailer Toys R US Inc, and internet domain registration company Go Daddy Group Inc.

Private equity still accounts for most of KKR's assets under management, but the firm has been diversifying into credit and hedge funds.

How You Can Make Your Home An Oasis With Some Improvements ...

Home improvement is a fantastic way to spruce up an outdated dcor or to give your home a new look. There are so many different options when it comes to home improvement while fitting almost anybody?s budget. Painting, wallpaper or even just new curtains are a few examples that will give any home a fresh look for a minimal price.

Beware custom made items. Custom is great for cabinets, but it can get costly when it comes to most items. Save money by figuring out how to modify store-bought items, or how to modify your home itself to fit around the item you purchase. This will typically end up saving you money.

How to paint an indoor room quickly and easily. If possible, try to do all your painting in daylight hours, as artificial light can cause you to miss small areas. Tackle the ceiling first, painting around the edges in bands, and working your way into the center. The walls should be painted starting at the top, and working downwards in sections.

A great home improvement tip is to not let your ego get in the way when making renovations. Sometimes, a renovation you may have in mind does not need to be done because it could violate a particular building code, or it could even harm the value of your home.

Install radiant heat under your new tile floors. There are kits available for the do-it-yourself homeowner, and it?s really not rocket science. It will make a dramatic difference in the ?wow? factor of your home both to guests and to potential buyers. Invite them to take their shoes off and feel the heat!

If you are interested in changing the look of your bathroom, this space could be the perfect choice for your next home improvement project. Give your bathroom an extra special touch by installing radiant floor heat and a light-tube, which gives the space the appearance of having natural light. Both features come with instructions that are easy to follow.

Installing new lighting fixtures is a great investment. Dark or dim rooms can seem smaller and depressing. Simply installing additional lighting can give new life to a room. A bright kitchen not only makes it easier to cook, but can liven the whole house, and a well lit bathroom can seem much larger than it really is.

When it comes to home improvement, be aware that you should never pay more than 35% of the project cost up front as a down payment. This is to ensure that you do not lose your money if the contractor backs out. Always pay by some method of payment that can be tracked such as check, instead of cash. Finally, only pay for the complete job when the job is actually completed.

If you live in a home that was built before 1990, consider having your attic re-insulated with newer materials and energy saving foam. Newer home insulation technology can save you hundreds of dollars in less than a year by improving the overall efficiency of your heating and cooling systems.

Increase your productivity when installing new kitchen cabinets by planning the order in which you will hang them. Install the top cabinets first so you do not have to lean over the base cabinets to attach them to the wall. Beginning in a corner is the easiest way to avoid fitting problems.

In conclusion, it can be quite easy and affordable to improve your home?s appearance. If you are doing it yourself and only working on simple projects it will become obviously worth the little money spent. There are many options and styles available to suit everyone?s needs. Who doesn?t want to walk into their home and feel aesthetically refreshed?

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 saunters past FCC with AT&T-friendly LTE

Sure, the only flavor of the Galaxy Note 8.0 currently lining US shelves is the version just packing Wi-Fi, but it appears that the LTE variety is getting ready for a trip stateside. The FCC just inspected a version of the tablet carrying a 850 / 1900 GSM radio along with support for LTE Bands 2, 4, 5 and 17, which are all tell-tale signs of hardware that plays nice with AT&T's network. For those in need of a refresher, Samsung's tablet runs Jelly Bean and boasts a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, A-GPS, GLONASS, a hefty 4,600 mAh battery, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. With one of the final hurdles for availability on American shores cleared, you're that much closer to laying your paws on a slate that can moonlight as an unwieldy cellphone.

Striking green-eyed butterfly discovered in the United States

May 28, 2013 ? A new butterfly species from Texas, given the common name Vicroy's Ministreak, was discovered because of its striking olive green eye color, and was given a formal scientific name (Ministrymon janevicroy). This beautiful new butterfly may be the last truly distinctive butterfly species to be discovered in the United States.

Although individuals of Vicroy's Ministreak were deposited in the Smithsonian entomology collections a century ago, this species was unrecognized because it was confused with the common, similar-looking Gray Ministreak. Interestingly what distinguishes the two species is the distinctive olive-green eyes of the new species in contrast to the dark brown/black eyes of the Gray Ministreak.

As their common names suggest both species are diminutive, about the size of a thumbnail, and may occur at the same time and place. Besides eye color, each has different wing patterns and different internal structures. They have different, but overlapping, geographic distributions and habitat requirements.

Jeffrey Glassberg, President of the North American Butterfly Association, discovered Vicroy's Ministreak, and he named the species after his wife (Jane Vicroy Scott). Bob Robbins, the butterfly curator at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, together with Glassberg, are the authors of the paper officially describing Vicroy's Ministreak, published in the open access scientific journal ZooKeys.

Regardless of whether Vicroy's Ministreak turns out to be the last truly distinctive butterfly to be discovered in the United States, the era of new butterfly species, which began with Linnaeus more than 250 years ago, is ending in the United States. In tropical America, however, there are still hundreds upon hundreds of butterfly species awaiting discovery.

Kim Dotcom Wrote a Dance Track and Apparently Has a Whole Album

Not content to just launch an encrypted file-sharing site, get stranded in the middle of nowhere, or claim to have the patent for two-step authentication, Internet dude Kim Dotcom is also apparently coming out with an album of dance music? Yeah.

It's not Dotcom's first foray into music. You might remember that star-studded MegaUpload song that was way, way catchier than it had any right to be. His verse in that is probably still the peak of his musical career, but this new jam is definitely...a song.

It's a bizarrely combative tune. Sure, it's not the first song to come with some "let me see your fucking hands"s or "get your ass out on the floor"s, but damned if these don't sound particularly and earnestly threatening; the annunciation on that f-bomb is crystal clear. Otherwise, it's no Daft Punk-style insta-classic, but it's not exactly unlistenable either. Oh and what the hell is up with that vocal fry? "Hands in the aiiiiiirrrrrr." What are you doing, man?

Whatever the case, I just hope that the classic Dotcom GIF makes it into the inevitable music video. By itself. On repeat. Forever. [Gizmodo France]

Call on Sally Draper for more 'Mad Men' truth

TV

Sally Draper finally said to her dad, Don, what all of us have been thinking for six seasons of "Mad Men." It came at the tail end of last Sunday's episode -- an episode already jammed with noteworthy scenes and dialogue.

After being left alone with her two little brothers in Don and Megan's apartment, Sally confronts a burglar during the night. The older black woman convinces Sally that she is her "grandmother," that she raised Don and that he invited her to his home. Sally is skeptical, but the lady still gets away with robbing the place.

"She said she knew you," Sally says to her father on the phone a day later. "I asked her everything I know and she had an answer for everything. Then I realized I don?t know anything about you."

Image: Sally and Don Draper on 'Mad Men"

AMC

Welcome to the club, Sally. No one on the show really knows anything about Don. But what we do know is that Sally Draper's transition into her teen years is a welcome step for the character played by Kiernan Shipka.

Half the time we can't even remember the names of Sally's two brothers or whether they are the same kids every week, but Sally is a mainstay, and how she copes with her fractured family going forward could prove interesting.

Image: "Mad Men" intruder

Jordin Althaus / AMC

Another phone call gone wrong: "Grandma Ida" calls off the police after Sally and Bobby Draper find her in their dad's apartment.

Will Sally become a hippie flower child of the 1970s, protesting the remaining years of the Vietnam War? Is there any hope that she can have any kind of meaningful relationship with her mother, Betty? Will she dig deeper into her father's secrets, and if so, how will Don react?

The phone call at the end of the May 19 episode was a great juxtaposition to the call Don took at the start of the episode from his latest mistress, Sylvia. That call ended with Don whipping his phone into the office cocktail cart. The call from Sally ended with Don stunned silent by his daughter.

"We really wanted to show that Sally Draper doesn't know anything about her father," show creator Matthew Weiner says in a behind-the-scenes video from AMC. "These children are not being parented at all. That phone call at the end was really supposed to codify the episode as this big mystery being answered, but not being answered at all."

For now, let's hope Sally keeps talking. Soon or later it won't render Don speechless -- or at least semi-mute as he's been all season -- and fans of "Mad Men" could be witness to a meaningful dialogue.

The town of Moore is a community of 41,000 people located about 10 miles from Oklahoma City.

Obama offered prayers for the people of Oklahoma from the White House in recent days. He said that "while the road ahead will be long, their country will be with them every single step of the way."

Scientists discover how rapamycin slows cell growth

Friday, May 24, 2013

University of Montreal researchers have discovered a novel molecular mechanism that can potentially slow the progression of some cancers and other diseases of abnormal growth. In the May 23 edition of the prestigious journal Cell, scientists from the University of Montreal explain how they found that the anti-cancer and anti-proliferative drug rapamycin slows down or prevents cells from dividing.

"Cells normally monitor the availability of nutrients and will slow down or accelerate their growth and division accordingly. A key monitor of nutrients is a protein called the Target of Rapamycin (TOR), but we do not know the details of how this protein feeds signals downstream to control growth says Dr. Stephen Michnick, senior author and a University of Montreal biochemistry professor. He adds that, "we were surprised to find that TOR hooks up to a circuit that controls the exit of cells from division which in turn modulates the RNA message that codes for a key cell cycle regulator called B-cyclin".

In collaboration with Daniel Zenklusen, also a University of Montreal biochemistry professor and lead author and doctoral candidate Vincent Messier, discovered that when cells are starved for nutrients TOR sends a signal to shut down production of a chemical message in the form of RNA to synthesize B cyclin ", Dr. Michnick explained. "We also found that TOR acts through a previously unforeseen intermediary, a protein that makes small chemical modifications to proteins normally stabilize B cyclin ", he added. "We have known that starvation and a drug that mimics starvation, rapamycin, affects B cyclin synthesis, but we didn't know how. Our studies now point to one mechanism", noted Dr. Messier.

Dr. Zenklusen emphasized that, "this is an important finding with implications for our understanding on how the normal organism interprets its environment to control growth and it was a surprise to find a mechanism that works through the RNA that codes for a regulatory protein. Dr. Michnick adds, "rapamycin is a promising therapy for some cancers and other devastating maladies such as the rare lung disease called lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). It remains to be seen whether the pathway we have discovered might be an alternative target for the development of therapeutics against these diseases."

PFT: Bears will retire Ditka's No. 89 in December

Rob RyanAP

In 2012, the Saints? defense fell apart during a season marked by suspensions for the bounty program run by former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. In 2013, one Saints player says, they?re going back to that old Gregg Williams mentality.

Minus the bounties, of course.

Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins says new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is a lot more like Williams than he was like last year?s defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo. And Jenkins likes the toughness and aggressiveness that Ryan preaches.

?Personality-wise they are very similar,? Jenkins told the Associated Press. ?They?re cut from the same cloth in that they know that players and matchups are what defense is all about and they have a lot of personality and they?re aggressive in their play-calling.?

Williams was an assistant to Rob?s dad, Buddy Ryan, and both Williams and Rob Ryan have said many times that Buddy Ryan?s influence was extremely important.

?They?re all from the same school, the Buddy Ryan defense, so there are a lot of similarities between what Gregg was running and what Rob is bringing,? Jenkins said. ?But I think Rob has a few more wrinkles with the 3-4 and everything, and I think we?re going to have fun.?

Jenkins says the Saints under Ryan will have a defense that the rest of the league fears.

?There?s a line and you don?t cross it, but you want to get as close to that line as you can,? Jenkins said. ?We definitely want to be a physical, feared defense.?

Williams did cross the line. But a physical, feared defense is just what the Saints want Ryan to bring.

Cold-loving bacteria offer clues for life on Mars

Joel Barker, courtesy of Ohio State University

Ellesmere Island, Canada, is home to cold-loving bacteria that live in permafrost.

By Tanya Lewis, LiveScience

A microbe discovered in the Canadian high Arctic thrives at the coldest temperature known for bacterial growth.

Researchers found the newly discovered bacterium,?Planococcus halocryophilus OR1, in permafrost ? permanently frozen ground ? on Ellesmere Island. The organism thrives at 5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 degrees Celsius), and holds clues to adaptations that might be necessary for?life on Mars?or Saturn's moon Enceladus, where temperatures are well below freezing.

The microbe lives inside veins of salty water, and can survive because the salt prevents the water in the veins from freezing, study leader Lyle Whyte of McGill University in Montreal said in a statement. The bacterium can remain active and breathing at temperatures down to at least minus 13 degrees F (minus 25 degrees C) in permafrost, Whyte said.

Whyte and his team studied the bacterium's genome sequence and found that?P. halocryophilus OR1?withstands the cold and salt thanks to modifications in its cell structure, cell function and an abundance of cold-adapted proteins. Changes in the cell membrane that protects the bacterium are one example of such modifications.

The bacterium also appears to contain high levels of a compound that works as molecular antifreeze, as well as protecting the cell from the salty fluid in its environment.

These microbes might be?bad news for global warming, which is melting permafrost in Arctic regions. Permafrost contains dead organic matter that bacteria can break down, releasing carbon dioxide and venting the greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. More of these microbes mean more greenhouse gas gets released.

Still, Whyte calls the bacterium "our cold temperature champion," adding "what we can learn from this microbe may tell us a lot about how similar microbial life may exist elsewhere in the solar system."

It's not the first time life has been found in permafrost conditions. Cold-loving?extremophiles,?called psychrophiles, are most often bacteria, fungi or algae. These hardy microbes have been found living beneath sheets of ice in Siberia and Antarctica, where temperatures range from 23 to 68 degrees F (minus 5 to 20 degrees C).

A 2006 review article in the journal EMBO Reports describes some of the adaptations organisms have developed for surviving the challenges of life at these frigid temperatures. These challenges include slowed rates of biochemical reactions and more viscous fluid environments.

At Cannes' movie palace, talk of TV's rise

CANNES, France (AP) ? The annual Cannes festival on the French Riviera is the grandest platform in the world for the highest ambitions of film, a place where the art form is worshipped with wild passion and adoring reverence. Movies are projected pristinely in regal theaters, where they're greeted by the world's cinephiles with feverish excitement.

But even at this bastion of the big screen, director after director has come through preaching the opportunities of the small screen. Up and down the Croisette, talk of TV's ascendance is rampant.

"The way that things are moving because of the financing of films, television has almost become where a lot of people seek creativity," said Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, who premiered at the festival his Bangkok noir "Only God Forgives," starring Ryan Gosling. "It's opened up a whole new arena."

Danish TV's current quality has spread internationally (including "The Killing," which was remade in America). Refn, the director of "Drive," is working on his television debut, a version of the 1969 French science fiction film "Barbarella" for France's Canal Plus.

Refn said that in the past 10 years, TV has leveled the field, creatively, and is now "sometimes much more satisfying than anything around."

"I love television," he said. "I love the size of it. I love to touch them. I like to watch them. I love the remote control. I love the power of the remote control. I love everything about the television."

One of this year's most notable films in competition won't even be released theatrically in the U.S.: Steven Soderbergh's Liberace melodrama "Behind the Candelabra." Hollywood studios passed on the film, which stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, suggesting that it was too gay to play at the box office. HBO picked up the $23 million film and will air it Sunday.

Soderbergh, long considered one of America's finest filmmaking talents, is stepping away from moviemaking, but is enthusiastically moving into television. He'll reportedly make a 10-episode series about a turn-of-the-century New York hospital, starring Clive Owen. (Soderbergh also produced the 2003 Washington, D.C., drama "K Street.")

"There's a lot of great stuff being made," said Soderbergh. "You can go narrow and deep, and I like that. And this is all ("Sopranos" creator) David Chase. He single-handedly rebuilt the landscape. Anything that's on now that's any good is standing on his shoulders."

"I don't hear anybody talking about movies the way they talk about TV right now," said Soderbergh.

But Cannes remains one of the great arguments for the vibrancy of movies. Year after year, it gathers together many of the world's best films, and this year's festival, the 66th, has been no different in that respect.

Audiences have been wowed by the Coen brothers' wry melancholy ("Inside Llewyn Davis"), the classical skillfulness of James Gray ("The Immigrant"), the shambling grandeur of Paolo Sorrentino ("The Great Beauty") and many other sensory feasts. At Cannes, cinema is utterly alive.

But there are economic forces at work that have contributed to the shift. As audiences have becoming increasingly fractured, studios have concentrated more on enormous blockbusters. While advances in film equipment have made making a movie easier, getting it seen has become harder.

Director James Toback premiered at Cannes his "Seduced and Abandoned," a documentary he made with Alec Baldwin. The two filmed their sometimes humiliating efforts to find financing ? and the necessary marketing budget ? for an adult drama. With appearances from Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and Roman Polanski, the movie often feels like a funeral for the days of popular, dangerous movies.

"The movie business is tough, and it's tougher now than ever," said Baldwin, who largely stepped out of film to star in Tina Fey's acclaimed sitcom "30 Rock." ''Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever make another movie again."

"Seduced and Abandoned," fittingly, was picked up not for theatrical release, but by HBO. (The network will also broadcast another film at Cannes playing out of competition, Stephen Frears' documentary "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight.")

David Fincher's entry to television with the political thriller "House of Cards" for Netflix sent reverberations through the business, partly because Fincher is such a widely respected filmmaker.

But talent is increasingly flocking to TV because of acclaimed shows like "Mad Men," ''Downton Abbey," ''Girls," ''Breaking Bad" and many others. The medium allows for more novelistic storytelling and, often, greater exposure.

"It's nice for actors because more people see it," said Kristin Scott Thomas, who stars in "Only God Forgives." ''You can spend weeks and weeks and weeks making a film that very few people will see, and that's sort of dispiriting."

"It's very satisfying when millions see something," she added. "It's as simple as that."

Not everyone, though, endorsed TV at Cannes. The 87-year-old Jerry Lewis barked: "Never watch television, if you can help it." Henri Behar, the moderator of Lewis' press conference, noted that that was an appropriate sentiment at a film festival.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says his administration is willing to consider accepting increased oversight of lethal drone strikes outside of war zones like Afghanistan.

In a speech on new contours of his counterterrorism strategy, Obama took note Thursday of a number of proposed ways of doing that ?- including the establishment of an independent oversight board in the executive branch of the government.

He did not endorse any particular proposal but said he will engage Congress in exploring a number of options for increased oversight. He cautioned that some proposals may introduce a layer of bureaucracy into national-security decision-making, without giving the public added confidence in the oversight process.

Obama also said that his administration already briefs Congress on all drone operations.

Scientists Growing New Crystals To Make LED Lights Better

I was under the impression that the issue of translating LED light into a broad swath of color was an already solved problem (except for some fine-tuning optimization), using appropriately-sized nanoparticles which hand the energy from the photons around, slicing-and-recombining energy from photons into different sized packets and re-emitting the light at a frequency characteristic of the size of the nanoparticle. Cover the LED with a bunch of these in a range of sizes and you get a smooth spectrum.

Works the other way, too: Coat a solar cell with such particles and they take the random-frequency photons from the sun and slice them up into multiple new photons at a frequency good for the solar cell bandgap, and mash the levtovers into more big photons to re-slice to the correct size. (It's not 100%, since some of the photons get away. But it's more than a 2x improvement over a bare cell, which only takes one slice off each photon and throws the rest away.)

If this is correct, this project looks like just a fine-tuning of making the nanoparticles, or finding materials for them that are somewhat more efficient than what was already being used (which was pretty good).

I haven't been following this all THAT closely. Have I misunderstood the current stuff? Or is this just a little incremental tweak along the cutting edge?
