Wichita considers golf course improvements

Emily Behlmann / WBJ

At MacDonald Golf Course, the city is looking to make?ADA improvements and perform cart bridge maintenance.

The Wichita City Council is set to consider this week whether to issue bonds to fund several improvements at the city?s municipal golf courses. The improvements ? and a smaller budget to fund them ? are part of a broader plan for turning around the courses, which have been struggling financially.

The city already has implemented portions of that plan, increasing greens fees by $1 and approving a study on the possible future privatization of the municipal courses.

The plan also calls for reducing from $6.2 million to $1.1 million the courses? capital improvement fund. City staff are seeking City Council permission to go ahead and issue bonds for those $1.1 million in improvements.

The proposed projects include:

? Roof and siding replacement at the L.W. Clapp Golf Course clubhouse, plus ADA improvements and cart bridge maintenance at the course.

? ADA improvements and clubhouse upgrades to restrooms and patio/cart staging areas at Tex Consolver Golf Course.

? ADA improvements and cart bridge maintenance at MacDonald Golf Course.

? Clubhouse restoration work at Arthur B. Sim Golf Course.

? Clubhouse restoration work at Auburn Hills Golf Course.

? Parking lot resurfacing and striping at all five courses.

The city plans to offset the golf course spending with a $1.3 million decrease in the funding it puts toward a 2018 Planeview Park improvement project.
