Some of?Apple's new MacBook Pros with the?Retina display may be seeing?ghosting images?appearing on the screen.
The issue has been noticed and commented on by those on Apple's community forums, on?YouTube?(see below),?as well as by long-time Mac pros. Among them is Lloyd Chambers, whose Mac Performance Guide website for pro photographers and "performance addicts," showed a photo of the ghosting problem.
"A latent image 'burns in'?to the deskop when a window is left on screen," wrote Chambers on his website. "This has now happened repeatedly.
"The problem occurs in as little as 20 minutes; close the window and the desktop is left with a latent image; a ghost image of whatever text or graphic was in the window left on screen."
Msnbc.com has contacted Apple for comment; we will update this post if we hear back. Individual users, sharing their stories on the company's support site, have said that when they've notified Apple, or taken their laptops into Apple stores, new laptops have been ordered for them as replacements. The reason for the problem has not yet been explained.
But the issue is frustrating, especially as the new laptop's starting price is $2,199. The Retina display, which has an?unprecedented 2880-by-1800 pixels, has received generally rave reviews.
Different users are seeing the problem in different areas of the display. "Aut0maticdan" wrote on Apple's support site:
Hey, those of you having this issue, I'd love to know what part of the screen your burn-in occurs.
I was messing with it last night and the mark goes from the bottom to about an inch above the bottom of the screen.? Its about two inches wide above the F8, F9, F10 keys. ...?I didn't notice it until I changed my desktop background to be a solid color, but its also noticeable in apps like Aperture.

A team of MIT researchers found ice may make up 22 percent of the material on the moon's quite bright crater floor.

But with new observations using the laser altimeter on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft, a team of researchers has essentially illuminated the crater?s interior with laser light, measuring its albedo, or natural reflectance.

The area around the moon's Shackleton crater could be a prime site. Scientists have long thought that the crater ? whose interior is a permanently sunless abyss ? may contain reservoirs of frozen water. But inconsistent observations over the decades have cast doubt on whether ice might indeed exist in the shadowy depths of the crater, which sits at the moon's south pole.
The scientists found that the crater?s floor is quite bright, an observation consistent with the presence of ice. In fact, ice may make up 22 percent of the material on the crater floor, with possibly more ice embedded within the crater walls.
?We decided we would study the living daylights out of this crater,? said Maria Zuber from the Massachuesetts Institute of Technology, who lead a team to study Shackleton Crater. ?From the incredible density of observations we were able to make an extremely detailed topographic map.?
For laser altimeter observations, elevation maps can be created by measuring the time it takes for laser light to bounce down to the Moon?s surface and back to the instrument. The longer it takes, the lower the terrain?s elevation. Using these measurements, the group mapped the crater?s floor and the slope of its walls.
The team used over 5 million measurements to create their detailed map.
While the crater?s floor was relatively bright, Zuber and her colleagues observed that its walls were even brighter. The finding was at first puzzling. Scientists had thought that if ice were anywhere in a crater, it would be on the floor, where no direct sunlight penetrates. The upper walls of Shackleton crater are occasionally illuminated, which could evaporate any ice that accumulates.
A theory offered by the team to explain the puzzle is that ?moonquakes?? seismic shaking brought on by meteorite impacts or gravitational tides from Earth ? may have caused Shackleton?s walls to slough off older, darker soil, revealing newer, brighter soil underneath. Zuber?s team?s ultra-high-resolution map provides strong evidence for ice on both the crater?s floor and walls.
?There may be multiple explanations for the observed brightness throughout the crater,? said Zuber. ?For example, newer material may be exposed along its walls, while ice may be mixed in with its floor.?
The crater, named after the Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, is nearly 20 km (more than 12 miles) wide and over 3 km (2 miles) deep ? about as deep as Earth?s oceans. Zuber described the crater?s interior as ?extremely rugged ? It would not be easy to crawl around in there.?
She added that the new topographic map will help researchers understand crater formation and study other uncharted areas of the moon.
?I will never get over the thrill when I see a new terrain for the first time,? Zuber said. ?It?s that sort of motivation that causes people to explore to begin with. Of course, we?re not risking our lives like the early explorers did, but there is a great personal investment in all of this for a lot of people.?
Ben Bussey, staff scientist at Johns Hopkins University?s Applied Physics Laboratory, said the new evidence for ice in Shackleton crater may indeed help determine the course for future lunar missions.
?Ice in the polar regions has been sort of an enigmatic thing for some time ? I think this is another piece of evidence for the possibility of ice,? Bussey says. ?To truly answer the question, we?ll have to send a lunar lander, and these results will help us select where to send a lander.?
And for any humans explorers, a crater like Shackleton at the lunar poles may well be the best location for a base, as the poles contain regions of near-permanent sunlight needed for power, and regions of near-permanent darkness containing ice ? both of which would be essential resources for any lunar colony.
The team?s research was published today in the Journal?Nature.

The Black Keys have been keeping busy lately, though very little of that activity has to do with actual music.
Instead, the Keys — who wrapped one leg of their El Camino world tour last month — are using their downtime to fire up the legal machine, filing a pair of copyright infringement lawsuits against Pizza Hut and the Home Depot.
The suits, filed late last week, allege that two recent commercials — one touting Pizza Hut's Cheesy Bites Pizza, the other promoting Ryobi power tools — feature music that sound a bit too much like the Keys' hits "Gold on the Ceiling" and "Lonely Boy," respectively. The Keys are seeking damages and an order preventing the continued use of the songs in the spots.
The suits claim that both companies received written notices that the ads misused the Black Keys' music, and according to The Associated Press, the band is looking to make them pay, to the tune of "unspecified damages of more than $75,000 apiece."
"The experts confirmed that this was copyright infringement," a band spokesperson told the AP.
A spokesperson for Pizza Hut told the AP that the company had yet to actually review the suit, and a rep for Home Depot added that "respect for intellectual property rights is a matter we take very seriously."
Of course, that's not the only bit of Black Keys news out there. On Friday, oft-quoted drummer Patrick Carney — who in the past has taken shots at Spotify's Sean Parker, Nickelback and Lady Gaga — was at it again, sounding off to Rolling Stone on a variety of topics, including dance music and the fact that the recently reunited Van Halen (which features Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang, on bass, in place of founding member Michael Anthony) is "f---ing retarded."
"I have no interest in seeing bands with partial lineups. I just saw Van Halen without Michael Anthony ... it was such a f---ing bummer. Like, what the f--- is the point?" Carney said. "I mean, sure, Eddie Van Halen's son is a pretty good bass player and he's a 20-year-old kid and that's cool, but like, what the f--- is that? ... If someone is able to be in a band for 30 years and then people are okay with replacing him with a 17-year-old, they're obviously motherf---ing a--holes, right?"
He also added that on a majority of recent festival dates, the Keys have witnessed first-hand the ascent of electronic dance music, and it mystifies him, to say the least.
"I don't understand it. I think when you're trying to sell a hundred thousand tickets, you have to have a diverse crowd," he said. "I think you have to kind of hedge your bets and make sure there's stuff for people who listen to that music. I don't know who listens to that kind of music, instrumental versions of LMFAO or whatever."
Oh, and Carney added that the Keys will return to the studio in July to begin work on the follow-up to El Camino, with the hopes of having the album out next year. So, yeah, there's a lot going on right now — even if there really isn't.

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? Sea levels around the world can be expected to rise by several metres in coming centuries, if global warming carries on. Even if global warming is limited to 2 degrees Celsius, global-mean sea level could continue to rise, reaching between 1.5 and 4 metres above present-day levels by the year 2300, with the best estimate being at 2.7 metres, according to a study just published in Nature Climate Change. However, emissions reductions that allow warming to drop below 1.5 degrees Celsius could limit the rise strongly.
The study is the first to give a comprehensive projection for this long perspective, based on observed sea-level rise over the past millennium, as well as on scenarios for future greenhouse-gas emissions.
"Sea-level rise is a hard to quantify, yet critical risk of climate change," says Michiel Schaeffer of Climate Analytics and Wageningen University, lead author of the study. "Due to the long time it takes for the world's ice and water masses to react to global warming, our emissions today determine sea levels for centuries to come."
Limiting global warming could considerably reduce sea-level rise
While the findings suggest that even at relatively low levels of global warming the world will have to face significant sea-level rise, the study also demonstrates the benefits of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius and subsequent temperature reductions could halve sea-level rise by 2300, compared to a 2-degree scenario. If temperatures are allowed to rise by 3 degrees, the expected sea-level rise could range between 2 and 5 metres, with the best estimate being at 3.5 metres.
The potential impacts are significant. "As an example, for New York City it has been shown that one metre of sea level rise could raise the frequency of severe flooding from once per century to once every three years," says Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, co-author of the study. Also, low lying deltaic countries like Bangladesh and many small island states are likely to be severely affected.
Sea-level rise rate defines the time for adaptation
The scientists further assessed the rate of sea-level rise. The warmer the climate gets, the faster the sea level climbs. "Coastal communities have less time to adapt if sea-levels rise faster," Rahmstorf says
"In our projections, a constant level of 2-degree warming will sustain rates of sea-level rise twice as high as observed today, until well after 2300," adds Schaeffer, "but much deeper emission reductions seem able to achieve a strong slow-down, or even a stabilization of sea level over that time frame."
Building on data from the past
Previous multi-century projections of sea-level rise reviewed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were limited to the rise caused by thermal expansion of the ocean water as it heats up, which the IPCC found could reach up to a metre by 2300. However, this estimate did not include the potentially larger effect of melting ice, and research exploring this effect has considerably advanced in the last few years. The new study is using a complementary approach, called semi-empirical, that is based on using the connection between observed temperature and sea level during past centuries in order to estimate sea-level rise for scenarios of future global warming.
"Of course it remains open how far the close link between temperature and global sea level found for the past will carry on into the future," says Rahmstorf. "Despite the uncertainty we still have about future sea level, from a risk perspective our approach provides at least plausible, and relevant, estimates."
