Early child education isn't an assembly line - Blogs - The Denver Post

Re: ?Colorado wins Race to the Top money for early childhood push,? Dec. 7 news story.

I am pleased that Colorado is receiving funds to support early childhood education. However, I am not convinced spending it on assessments to track kindergartners? ?readiness to learn? is a good use of the money. I know the educational establishment, including the Colorado Department of Education, is fixated on assessments, but someone needs to tell them that education is not an assembly line for which all the raw materials must be made ready so that they can build an educated person.

Development and learning, especially during the first five years of life, are a much more complicated process.

The dollars could be better spent on showing K-12 schools how to adapt their curricula and instruction to ?make public school kindergartens ready for every child,? and, heaven forbid, to pay early childhood educators more than a greeter at Wal-Mart.
